F10 D5 BiTurbo - #137

Post by FiFTY » Sat Jan 23, 2021 10:22 pm

My wife's new car, (our new daily) - collected from Sytner Nottingham in early January, having sealed the deal just before Christmas. We weren't looking to buy a car but the spec was too tempting. Number 137, F10 D5 BiTurbo. She replaces a Mercedes CLS350 CDi Grand Edition (Brabus chipped).

The car has had significant prep prior to being sold but all in all we are both incredibly pleased - there are a few issues we are still ironing out with the dealership but I'm sure the outcome will be a positive one.

Registered in March 2013, she has just over 40,000 on the clock, and having been checked out by my Ferrari/Maserati specialist, it's a solid and incredibly clean car.

Spec:
Imperial Blue with high gloss shadow line exterior trim
Oyster/Black Nappa Leather interior and piano black dash with Alpina insignia
Sport steering wheel
Comfort seats
Heads Up display
Pro SatNav
Reverse assist camera
Alpina Limited Slip Differential
Split folding rear seats (a must as we frequently go camping/mountain biking)
Powered boot lid/folding mirrors

The car didn't originally come with the Alpina decals (as I'm sure you will have noticed) but the wife insisted!

Congrats and welcome!

I saw her post on Instagram with the decals, looks fab with the blue paint!

They are superb cars, had mine 4 years now and still love it. Particularly like your car has no privacy glass and shadowline trim 8)

Wish you many happy miles of ownership! PS. Nice Maser too!

Very similar to my wife’s D5, we’ve had it for 5 years now.

So what are the issues that sytner are sorting out for you?

Great looking car and as you say, a really nice spec too. Makes a very cool two car garage.

Thanks guys. It is indeed a very cool car with a nice specification which is part of the reason why we pulled the trigger on this particular car. For me the only missing item is an upgraded sound system as it is the entry level speakers/amp but the rest of the car easily makes up for it

I am surprised at how much attention it gets - so much for it being the understated BMW performance option. Also I am not quite used to having BMW drivers wave at me and try to drum up conversations.

Having owned and driven several BMW's I am in love with how the Alpina feels every time I open the door and take a seat, it would almost be alien if not for the familiar F series dash and iDrive (had a F30 318D company car for 4 years)

@D3orbust AV Engineering found only a couple of points on the car.

1. Brake discs glazed - the car was standing for a while pre purchase and caused the discs the rust. AV suggested bedding in the discs again once the weather has got a little warmer
2. Rear pads low - he advised that the warning light may trigger soon. I am going to order new pads next month
3. Cracked rear diff bushing - this is clearly a defect upon purchase, while I am not overly concerned about worn pads I expect this to be sorted under warranty

I have since noticed that the drivers side door rattles and the lock actuator is noticeably slower than the others - also expect these to be inspected and resolved under warranty as we did pay a premium for this low mileage car through the Alpina MD

Sytner took the car away yesterday to carry out the rectification work. They left me with a courtesy car, it is a bit like swapping a shark for a shoe but it's fun around town... 218d

Hi FiFTY

She used to be mine! I bought her new from Sytner Sheffield, my third Alpina (D3MT, then D3BT followed by D5BT) and then I changed to a Tanzanite Blue M4 followed in 2017 by my current Long Beach Blue M2.

Wow, she still looks good after 8 years... I have to admit that I don't cover huge mileages each year in any of the Alps/BMs (current M2 only just gone over 10k!), as we tend to use our other runaround, a Golf GTi...

However, whenever we drove on long journeys, the D5 was so comfortable as well as being rapid and economical and my wife always commented that she was the best car we ever owned!

I'd still like to come back to join everyone with another Alpina, so will keep checking in to the Forum to see what is happening...

Happy Trails!

BW

Hi, Mrs FiFTY here!

So the car is finally back. Issues sorted although it did take a little longer than anticipated. I drove us up to Nottigham Sytner to drop off the shoe (218d) and collect her. Very happy to have her sitting on the drive again.

One thing that I need to sort out ASAP is getting more alloy keys cut. I'm assuming I can get this cut in the usual way so heading down to Timpsons at some point (if I can find one that is open) to see if they can help.

@Steelman fantastic! I did wonder whether you were a member. She's a beauty and I'm loving every minute. Popping to the shops should take 20 mins, but with the D5 it's more like an hour and 20 mins! I'm looking forward to finally taking her on a long road trip soon if all goes well in the world. Last long trip was for our honeymoon to southern Italy and I'd like to do something similar and hit the German autobahns on the way down.

From my experience, Timpsons will say that their matching key will work but it doesn't. It looks remarkably close on inspection and fits the slot but it doesn't turn the barrel.

Apparently there is a chap in Australia who does replacement keys and all he needs is the key number, but I don't have the details to hand - hopefully someone else will

Welcome Mrs FIFTY

These cars are perfect for the long tours. Took mine to Norway a couple of years ago and I really don’t think there’s a better car out there to do the trip in. I was getting 1000km per tank too!

Enjoy your fab car 8)

I think that might depend on how good the chap is at your local Timpsons. My experience with wheel keys was excellent at my local Timpsons. I have two different keys for my wheels, reason unknown, and the guy looked at them and said he didn't have these blanks but said he had a book that could help identify them and ordered up the blanks which arrived in a couple of days. I got more spares cut than planned as it was cheaper than just getting a couple on order. They all fitted perfectly even though the guy said if any of them stick return them and he would adjust them if I could also bring the locks.

My original key brand is STS.

The key brand supplied by Timpsons was JMA and it had a code DOM 1D

Not sure if the keys on my B10 are similar to an F10. Hope this helps.

Thanks all, the keys are still yet to be cut as I've had a few other more urgent things to address! Hoping to head down to Timpsons tomorrow to see if they can help out.

So! A quick update on some developments with the car...

Bought rear pads from BMW Cotswold (Cheltenham) - great service, highly recommend them. Had the pads fitted at a local garage - the glaze on the front discs from the car sitting on Sytner's lot is finally going and the brakes are now much better.

A few days later I noticed that the driver's side window wouldn't open fully, getting stuck almost half way - strange as it had been fine in the previous weeks.

Contacted Sytner Nottingham who were reluctant to look at the car again (despite being the last place the door had been dismantled as they replaced the lock actuator at their cost - worth noting this nugget of information for what comes next!). Rather than arguing the point we called around and ended up taking the car to Marshalls Hampshire (Fleet). Dealt with Ben, who was pleasant and helpful throughout. We dropped the D5 off in the morning for an inspection and Ben called in the afternoon with some interesting news.

See photos below - and spot the issue

Ben at Marshalls informed us that this obviously wasn't a warranty issue and had taken it upon himself to contact the service manager at Sytner Nottingham direct to get them to foot the bill. Very nice of him to do this for us. I collected the car and torch and whilst I was sat with Ben, Sytner confirmed they would pay and give us a courtesy call. Spoke to the service manager at Sytner who profusely apologised for the inconvenience and was somewhat baffled at how his mechanic's missing torch ended up in our driver's side door(!) but confirming that it did indeed belong to the tech who did the work. I pointed out it's not exactly an ideal situation but I would just like to move on, pointing out that it has been a rather frustrating purchase process. Thankfully, Marshalls confirmed that the torch hasn't caused any further damage to the window or mechanism (but to let them know if there were any issues) and Sytner, as a gesture of good will, paid for a tank of fuel.

Got to keep the torch as well!

Today, we've had a "driver restraint system fault" after hearing a scraping and snapping sound from the steering wheel. So, back to Marshalls it is!

The car is definitely worth it though and I'm still in awe of its performance.
