D3 MT - Base Bodywork
D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Morning folks.
Looking for some advice and knowledge from you lovely people.....
I'm hoping i already know this but want confirmation before i pull the trigger and buy
I have some considerable rusting around the wheel arches and boot latches and have had a hefty quote for welding.
I feel given the availability of new panels on ebay etc that fresh new panels are the way to go.
Just confirming - that i can use the 2006/2007 pre-lci bodywork from a 320d
I've used realoem.com, but as you will know, no "SE" or "M Sport" options come up....

Re: D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Seems a sensible route and assures the chance of it returning are removed.
Standard 3-series body parts, and base cars weren't Msport based, but that only affects a few of the plastic parts such as bumpers, cill covers etc as the metal bits are common parts
Cheers

Re: D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Thanks sir...
I've always been under the assumption that the base bodywork was 320d "SE".
When talking to the random mechanics in the past when i have had work done, this has always served me well enough.
Only time i had bother was for the dpf......

Re: D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Correct. The base car panels are all the same, and then the Msport had the plastic bits (as stated above) with all their silly addenda to ruin the look.

Re: D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Hi all,
I also have a D3 MT (E91) and although it has been garaged for a few years by the previous owner and kept covered last winter by me, I'm keeping it on the road this winter. Can you tell me what to look out for to prevent future rusting e.g. condition of the aches, where to keep clean. Any photos of rust zones would be much appreciated. Is there anything specific to Alpina that may influence rusting or is it just the same as any other E91.
Good luck in your sourcing Lemmy.
Thanks in advance.

2007 E91 D3 #190
Best of previous cars:
EG Civic Hatch (great car, a real companion)
E36 318is (long-term test drive from my brother )
Alfa 155 1.8 T.Spark (at 19yo I didn't know what a head gasket was until..)

Re: D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Had a couple of E91s (07 and 09 plate) and have found few corrosion issues. The only spot on my 07 was a small bubble starting just below the fuel filler. Probably best to keep the arches clean - the rears do clog up with mud and also along the sills - both crud traps. When I get a couple of hours, I'll get those removed and see what state the metalwork is in.
Hope that helps,
Hope that helps,

I may be wrong but I thought some of the Alpinas had the wheel arches rolled for the bigger alloys then re-under sealed?

Re: D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Funny you say that because I bought my D3 MT last month and I was wondering why the arches were rolled... I'm glad it's an Alpina job and not a previous owner.

My problems are right round the wheel arches...
Looks like the way the panel is folded under catches water.
Also, I've always had problems with the boot, mainly around the boot mechanism/lock.

Oh no!!! What does that mean?JordanSuth wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 7:22 pmFunny you say that because I bought my D3 MT last month and I was wondering why the arches were rolled... I'm glad it's an Alpina job and not a previous owner.
Are the standard panels I've bought no good for a straight repair/replacement?
Re: D3 MT - Base Bodywork
Don’t panic.
Alpina IIRC just rolled the arch lips on standard BMW panels, I think, on the rear quarters only to accommodate the larger alloys and the wider stance (lower offsets) that the Classic and Dynamic alloys give the car.
Here’s why I think they just rolled the rears; the E92 Coupe and E93 convertible wings are plastic, they can’t be rolled, so I don’t think they touched the E90 saloon or E91 touring front wings at all either, just the rear arches.
But if you replace the wings or quarters just ask the body shop to trial fit the wheels and panels prior to spraying and adjust/roll as necessary, not a big job at all, also compare the profile of replacement arch lips with the existing, it’s only the lip rolled a little, not the whole panel massively pulled out job, which some owners do to fit huge wheels and drops of all sizes.
If you do these things yourself you can buy an arch lip roller, something I’ve not tried before, but as I understand you have to be careful not to crack the paint.
