To be honest a used 335d engine can be had for sub £1k now from larger engine dealers. Swap over the 330d and Alpina bits and I'd have been back on the road for under a grand.

This route will be costing BMW near £20k with labour.....!

I doubt it would be that simple. Theres always a bit more alpina to them in the engine bay than meets the eye

Not from the part list there isn’t. D3’s only have about 12 Alpina specific parts in the engine bay.

B3’s are a bit more involved.

That's quite a result. Interesting that under warranty, BMW usually fix issues up to the value of the car. Great that there's no perceived wear on components, even at that mileage. It's when they re-assemble and find a stone rattling in a heat shield that they'll kick themselves.

BMW AUC warranty is unlimited claim values on none wear/lifetime parts.

BMW extended warranty is the value paid for the car at purchase from BMW less the VAT on the purchase cost.



Also I think it could be as simple as that, I’ve seen a 320d rattle like this before due to a loose bell housing bolt....

So two weeks further on and I'm getting a little frustrated.

Contacted BMW customer services to clarify what exactly is being done to the car along with what happens regarding the oil service it was due in 2000 miles (which having a new engine in logic would dictate it doesn't need one....)?

Reply from BMW was, they aren't allowed to tell me what they are replacing or renewing as this repair is 'good will'. They also can't advise regarding the service and I should negotiate that with the repairing dealer?!

So since the repairing dealer last emailed, I've sent two emails to them and two to BMW CS. Marshals have answered neither and BMW have been none committal about everything involved.

Up to this point I've been giving everyone the benefit of the doubt due to these crazy times, but we are fast approaching BMW having my car for 100 days and I'm starting to get the feeling I'm getting fobbed off.

I called the dealers manager direct today, no answer, called the main line and got the receptionist, who duly put me through to service, who bounced me straight back to reception, who then said someone will email me...

Hopefully this email comes with some good news in it!

I can understand the frustration, but if it comes back with an engine replacement it would be a nice end to the chapter...you can then do another 200k miles in it!

Regardless of the issues, I think this car was a cracking buy for the cost, and I love the colour combination. As said earlier in the thread, it makes a really nice change from Black leather.

I won’t be worrying about reliability on mine, with only 33k miles in 3.5yrs...
