B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
I dont know how this came about...I was supposed to be buying a one-off Individual Techno Violet E36 328 Sport Touring!
The 'good service history', turned out to be basically 'no service history except a few bills'. We've all been there! I withdrew from the deal, and in true rebound fasihon, took a last minute punt on an auction, and ended up buying B10 BOV, a relatively low mile (84k) 1997 B10 V8 in Dunkelsaphirblau Metallic over black.
It was the black leather that committed me to the deal. I'd been looking at various B10 V8 cars for a while, even a touring, but I couldnt ever get past the grey leather, which has always been a no-go on a BMW for me. Not only did it have the black leather, but the seats were Comforts, and I knew from having had an E38 with Contour seats, there was little else more comfortable.
So, sight unseen, you pays your money...would it be fair to say that the collection drive didn't go so well....It had all the hallmarks of a car that hadn't been driven much, and had loosened up considerably by the time I had driven it up from Dorset to West Sussex. I also had a list of items that I wanted to rectify, and get it handling in a similar fashion to the absolutely mint E39 Techno Violet 525i MSport that I had two years ago (supplied and serviced by same dealer from new).
Sean at Munich Legends inspected the car, and straight away the car was given a full Inspection II service, new spark plugs, brake lines, 5.1 fluid, new brakes front and rear, four new Pilot Sport 4s, new Viscous coupling, wishbone arm bushes, four wheel alignment, rocker cover gaskets, thermostat and a windscreen trim (thankfully without breaking the screen!).
So it now drives a thousand times better than it did, and seems to improve with every mile. I am yet to extend the engine in sport mode, but it's had one tank of Super Unleaded through it, and will continue to do so, as I blow the cobwebs out.

A few pictures of it as it is:
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
I have decided against having the wheels refurbished until the spring, but Lepsons will get the job. They have done such an amazing job on my wheels previously.
I love the Alpina mats, but they could do with a very thorough clean, a job for a detailer perhaps. Are replacement E39 Alpina mats available? I imagine not, in which case I might conserve these for 'show' use, and just order a set of charcoal E39 mats from BMW for everyday use.
The leather is nice and supple, but there are the odd area where it could do with a really good feed. I think the plan will be to wait until the weather warms up, and get busy on the back seat with the Gliptone twins!
The steering wheel looks as if it has done twice the mileage (dont worry, the paperworks confirm the right miles!), but that again could do with a really good clean, re-feed, and perhaps even a re-dye of the stitching if such a thing was possible. I know I have seen stitching pens to colour, I wonder if anyone has every seen this done, in the right shades.
I need to source a pair of wheel lock covers, I think ebay will be my friend there.

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Was spotted for sale recently
Black grill doesn’t look good imo and alpina Rondal badges swap back to bmw
Those mats are rare and earlier design probably nla you could get the later ones with diagonal stripes but should come good with a decent detailed
Nice pre facelift

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
I agree, grill and badges being switched out at some point
, but a lower priority to me than getting the dynamics sorted.
I think this should also be wearing Gingicators?
I may be wrong, but it also looks as if it has been fitted with facelift Xenon lights?
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Looks like it but a good addition
Think the clears actually work well on this car I’d leave tbh

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Agreed, the facelift lights are a good addition and suit the car. Nice car OP, enjoy!

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Managed to track down some wheel lock covers for the Softline wheels. They are a very snug fit (read don't fit flush) which may be due to a previous refurb. My plan is to have the wheels stripped and refurbished in the spring anyway.
If anyone has any tips on fitting/removing wheel lock covers, that is much appreciated, am yet to try. Although I have read a few comments about broken keys, which sounds annoying as I am someone that likes to regularly check the pressures.
I've actually seen (on eBay) that Horsham Forge sell a £25 tool to help. Has anyone tried one of these? I don't have any pullers for the wheel lock covers either, so will either track one/some down or just fab' something!

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
A little bit of lube on the o-rings helps with fitment both on the lock covers and the centre caps as well, I've had the generation 1 version of the Horsham Forge cover tool for years and I wouldn't be without it,
takes the stress off the key and you as you no longer have to worry that the keys twisting and about to break!

Oh Super, thank you. I will order one. Always good to have someone's testament. Am yet to try getting one off.Ikule wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2020 9:19 pmA little bit of lube on the o-rings helps with fitment both on the lock covers and the centre caps as well, I've had the generation 1 version of the Horsham Forge cover tool for years and I wouldn't be without it,

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
In other news, my local BMW factor have obtained (fingers crossed) from Alpina in Germany, a full replacement set of Alpina floor mats.
Mine has the very early Alpina diagonal logo on a green-grey background, but the drivers rubber heel pad keeps catching my heel as it's loose.
If the replacement ones are identical, then happy days. If they are the S ones (Charcoal with the patterned diagonal logo), and no reason why they will be, then I will probably use the new ones everyday and have the old ones deep-cleaned for any occasion the the car is on show, as I do think they are quite pleasantly niche!
New front wheel arch liners have also gone in, both sides, which is good, as one of the originals got a beating from a big puddle in the rain we've been having and blasted the arch liner from its mount. Old fasteners I guess.

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Yep the ones u have a super rare so be interested to see if your supplier gets the same ones
Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
Brand new mats arrived after a few weeks, from Buchloe.
Plan is to daily drive these, and have my rarer mats cleaned and restored, keep them for high days and holidays!
Storm Dennis meant that rain prevented fitment, but a good job for this week.

Re: B10 V8 - Rolling restoration
So these will go off for gentle restoration, and a deep clean!
Turns out rubber heel plate is just covering a heel hole, naturally!
