Water Tanker Didn't Like Me! - It's Back!

Post by Avtar » Mon Oct 28, 2019 7:45 pm

Got clipped by a Water Tanker turn at a set of lights, I don't think he knew he even hit me. Luckily a couple behind me stopped as witnesses and had the footage on their Dash Cam so that was nice.

The worrying conversation was with the Insurance Company (who farm out to Enterprise-Rent-A-Car, didn't know this was a thing?), they haven't inspected the car yet but on initial discussion think it may not be economical to fix?

Essentially it needs a new rear bumper and a new rear quarter panel.

That’s terrible news, sorry to hear that Avtar!

I’ve got plenty of copy adverts, going way back, if you need any. Seen 18 B3 3.3 Coupes in the last 12mths.

If the other driver is completely at fault then you are entitled to a full repair courtesy of their insurer. Don't be fobbed off - you've done nothing wrong and they are there to return your car to at least the state it was in prior to the accident.

In the meantime, you should be looking at £9-10k valuation minimum based on recent trends for B3 3.3 variants - my B3S has an agreed valuation of £13k with Admiral as a reference point (more valuable 3.4 and Touring - hence the differential in value)

Thanks for the offer, hopefully I won't need the evidence.

Always nice to get the advice from all on here. I do have valuation of 10K listed on my policy as that what I paid. Since then I have spent 4K on it so it could not be in better condition.

Thats not true.

The same rules apply to write-off calculations irrespective of whether it is your or their insurer who settles the claim.

If the car cannot be fixed economically it will be written-off. It would be illogical to suggest that any car would always be fixed, since many cars cannot be fixed economically, or even at all in extreme cases (where spare parts simply don't exist).

I had a beautiful 750i Individual written off like this, when someone hit me. I was offered the chance to buy the car for salvage afterwards, but it was genuinely unrepairable as it needed a new shell, even though it was mechanically fine and perfect inside.

Once you get into needing major body panels and painting, the costs escalate very quickly and seemingly minor jobs cost thousands. Plus if any of the suspension has been damaged or moved then they won't risk a repair without changing all that as well.

Good luck though, it may be minor, but the key is ensuring they use a high-value in their calculations as they will write-off at about 65% usually.

I stand corrected.

The important thing is that the car is insured at a value of £10k which allows for a fair amount of repairs before hitting the uneconomical trigger.

I also believe that even if the costs are above the write-off limit, but below the market value you can push for a repair, but then it's just more arguments to have with the insurer. Hopefully it won't be an issue in this case.

Thanks, they are currently trying to negotiate rates with my chosen garage, the same that repaired my Alpina D5, and they are definitely on the expensive side.

Sorry to hear Avtar, having seen it it's a lovely car and you are clearly looking after it, hope this incident doesn't unravel all that effort.

That's awful. I hope you get a good result in the end as I know how much you look after your cars.
