Alternator off today to replace the current-voltage regulator that's what I call it or the potentiomet on the parts box that's what BMW calls it.
what I can say it's not the easiest of jobs but decided to remove the alternator from the bottom of the car that way I could leave the supercharger in place just glad I have got small hands or I would have had to tell the wife to do it.

Not much room in there is there!!! I take it that you have a ramp or a pit.
What issue were you getting that needed that part changing?

No ramp or pit just two big jacks and a crawling board. The first issue was Tracker rang to say my car was being stolen then my speed camera detection equipment gave a warning of low voltage 11.8 to 12.0 when running but all the time a had no warning lights on the dash so plug in my Foxwell code come up with 28D7 DME not communicating with the alternator. basically, it had a dry joint because when the car was hot and restarted it would go back to 14.0 volts.ABRAD wrote:Not much room in there is there!!! Re: My B5 Alternator off today.
Resurrecting an old thread, but mine is also intermittently not charging.
Disconnecting the IBS doesn't make any difference. At 155k miles, maybe it's a dud regulator, perhaps a dry joint, or just worn out brushes. Whatever, it looks like alternator out and probably a recon unit, since at this sort of mileage the whole thing is probably on its last legs anyway.
Winne1, like you and for the same reasons, I am planning to remove from below. From your pics it looks as if you unbolted the power steering pump; if so, did you need to disconnect the pipework, or just move it all out of the way?
