A good independent will pretty much have the same equipment as a main dealer. My one does.

One quick question slightly away from original thread........If all info is stored on the key, which is read by BMW key slot at the dealer.....what happens if you only use one key?
What I mean is that the second key if not used will have no info stored.
Or is the info stored on BMW computer and the key slot (at the dealer) reads only the key number and draws the info from the main computer at BMW so it does not matter which key you use.
What happens with independents? Do they have access to BMW info or even do they have key readers?
Just curious, it might seem a stupid question to some but I am in the dark as such, if you could let me know I would be grateful.
Sorry to bend the thread a bit.

Happens alot, people drop in the spare/2nd key and we read it, automatically comes out as Outdated, will show what service was due (if at all) the last time it was used
The key wont update until you do approx 10km of driving, however the key can be updated by holding down the lock and start/stop button while the key is held up to the steering colum
As for independents, probably just reading off the I-Drive screen to find out whats due and when
