With what is essentially a re-flash and not a full rolling road remap with before and after figures, does someone really think they can do a better job than a car manufacturer who specialise in engines and whose R&D influences the next generation of the BMW lineup?
Say someone does squeeze a few...a few...more ponies out if it, it will be at the cost of reliability/smoothness/balance...maybe even all of them.
In short answer, Yes.
When a car's map is designed it takes in to account a very wide range of countries, climates and fuel irregularities. To compensate for this they increase the tollerences than what the engine is actually capable of to take in to account the wide variables.
A good mapper (one who can read, interpret and code a map - not just an idiot who bought a map on a disc) will discuss the car with you, what your wanting from the car, what your driving style is, where your likely to drive it, mileage, service history etc all before starting out to change anything that the manufacturer has set.
I've had mine remapped, it's not easy on a D3BT - it's not a straight forward 123d engine and a 123d map is not a good fit, the fuelling is out for a start and the injector open / shut sequences aren't quite right. There's a whole host of changes Alpina did to the map, comparing them side by side with a 123d map is evident. Sadly though many folk will just stick a 123d remap on it.
The result of my remap was an increase in HP, torque and fuel economy. The remap was carried out on a dynodynamics rolling road and took all day with the map going back and forth to the rollers to ensure it was correct. It wasn't cheap and it wasn't rushed but the result is worth it.
Nothing to see here.... move along in an orderly fashion please!
