mpg on E46 B3 3.3

Post by stjohnsmythe » Thu Sep 22, 2011 3:46 pm

Can anyone tell me what the normal average mpg is they get on their B3?

I use the car infrequently (get the train to work) and when I do use it tends to be stop/start traffic. My average mpg is about 17!!!

That's about right, that's somewhere about what I achieved.

It is a 3.3L engine. As a comparison I got about 14 on similar journeys out of my old 3.2L Jag XJ6 and the same out of a P32 4.0L petrol Range Rover.

When I collected mine on Monday, the OBC showed 14.9mpg
The previous owner used it for local journeys only and has only covered 4000 miles in the last year so that should give you a good idea of what happens.

I filled up in Oxford and drove the car back to the Midlands and have used it for commuting since Monday (a lot of stop/start in heavy traffic), plus, a little hoon last night to get acquainted with the car at speed and am currently showing a respectable 27.4mpg.

I've averaged almost 28 mpg over 60,000 miles. Most of my driving is out of town on longer runs. The best I've recorded was 33 mpg (motorway speed limit) and the worst was 14 mpg (track day at Brands Hatch....). I've never seen worse in normal use than low 20's even in town traffic.

If you have a light foot it may go to mid 20. The car has so much torque low down, in town driving I never see it pass through 2500rpm. Sometimes on a long run I do get about 450-500miles in about 74 litre tank. (Specif for 72 l itre but you can squeese in 1 or 2 litre more in the tank) between 80-90mph.

If you leave the car stationary and idling, the display mpg drops like a stone. I think mine is a little better on juice than my old 325ti Average is around the 25/27mpg mark.

My OBC has gone from 28 when I collected it, to stuck between 24.5 - 25.5. That consists of country roads, motorways and town driving. I thought it'd improve on our trip to Europe but it stayed the same.

If I drive it progressively up to the speed limit etc I can get 36mpg on my 20 mile commute to work.

Usually though its high 20's, or around 18 when giving it some.

I'm averaging about 28 mpg with my B3 3.3
A lot deoends on the driving style. Sitting at 60 or 80 on the motorway differs by 10 mpg

I have been monitoring my consumption with spritmonitor.de since I got the car 34000 miles ago.

The calculated average is 27,8 mpg.
Early this year I did an eco-"run" (1 full tank) and managed to get 36.877 mpg.
