Montego Blue D3 MT

Post by OllieD3 » Fri Nov 26, 2021 8:09 pm

Hello all,

I've been lurking for a while and I am now on the hunt for a specific pre LCI D3. It has to be a saloon, Montego Blue with classic Alpina wheels. Spec is not important but service history and body condition is. I would prefer a car that has not had any paintwork and it has to be rust free.

I very nearly bought #359 last week but on collection from the dealer I noticed a rear spring had failed. There were some other issues with it so I would advise anyone looking at this car to have it professionally inspected. Needless to say the car is not for me and I've had a rethink.

I am in no rush and can wait for the right car. Ideally one of your lovely cherished examples!

Thanks,

Ollie

Hi I’ve seen that car in passing in Hessle
Springs notorious on this model to fail, standard bmw spring I think, what other issues did u note, is is not anything to negotiate
Be a pretty long wait for that exact spec

Where to start….

The wheels need refurbishing, all the centre caps are shot. Front tyres are old and nearly on the wear bars. Rear tyres are new but Davanti’s.

It’s full history but there’s no record of any fluid changes (brake, coolant, diff etc). Brakes also look past their best.

The steering wheel was off centre so it needs an alignment check.

Rear shocks looked shot. The cracked spring was on the left side but the car was sat low on the right. Looked like the shock had blown with weeping on it. For me this would want at least a pair of rear springs, shocks mounts etc.

Rear lower window trim missing. Windscreen rubber perishing at the top.

Gear knob falling to bits.

Rear boot struts blown.

Rear diff weeping.

This is what i noticed when I went for a second viewing and had left a deposit on the car. I had asked about the suspension and been assured it was fine. Worryingly it had only just had an MOT so I decided to walk away and got my deposit back.

In addition to the above I was paying over the odds as the bodywork was quite good besides these issues. It really was heart over head so I’m relieved I didn’t end up with this one. I’m sure there would have been more than the above.

He was going to let me know when it had been repaired but he never got back to me and the car is on car and classic now for £7995 only the day after I found the damaged spring. Bearing in mind we agreed £6500 when it was being advertised at £6895.

I’m in no rush and happy to wait for a good one

Ah that’s a fair few bits then yes best walk away
Was curious if this is the only car you want or would you consider a e46 b3 or infact a d3 biturbo or MT different colour Montego is very nice though

It was a shame as initially it looked promising but I’m sure there’s a better example that will be worth waiting for. Yes it has to be a D3 in Montego blue. I prefer the more retro look of the pre LCI and I’m a bit put off the cam chain issues associated with the BT but the main reason is the looks with the classic wheels

It is different, but he’s been asking in some of the FB groups and originally considered this one before the one in Hull

Thanks chaps,

The one in Wales is #510 and the reason I started looking at D3’s again.

There’s quite a nice video of it on YouTube when it was for sale with only 70k on it https://youtu.be/Pox_iWIVZRU

The main reason I didn’t go for this one is that it has no recorded service history from 2018. The garage sent me some videos which showed quite a few paint defects, mixed front tyres and it generally didn’t look that well looked after. On the plus side the rear suspension was good!

The dealer got a little snappy in the messages and told me he didn’t have enough time to send anymore videos or pictures but I’d seen enough to tell me this would be another example that’s sadly been used and abused and probably owned by someone who could not afford to run it properly.

Ollie this one came up on Gumtree. Needs some work but does seem to have a significant amount of history and it’s Montego Blue with Classics

Cheers Bob,

Too much of a project for me. I won’t touch anything with rust on it as you’re forever chasing it. Looks well loved and well used. A good base for someone with the skills to bring it back. I’d be slightly concerned with the strut housing being rusted up as it is.

Thought you might say that.

The strut tower is most likely going to be surface rust, that's where the crossed out BMW VIN and re-stamped ALPINA VIN is. Someone has removed the protective film which should be covering both.
