A strange sound from somewhere

Post by Aggie » Mon Nov 20, 2023 2:57 pm

Hi All

I know the title doesn't help but my car has developed a strange intermittent sound. The best way I can describe it is that is sounds like the cooling fan is spinning up temporarily. It's only apparent when I'm driving. If I rev the car in Park or Neutral, nothing. it appears to happen when I initially apply the throttle then stops once the engine revs pick up. Also, it's more noticeable when I'm a bit heavy with the right foot. If i pull away nice and gently with a light pedal, I can't hear it. It's difficult to tell where it's coming from. I've tried it with the roof down and nothing heard. It's probably being drowned out by the wind noise.

Another thought is it might be transmission related. It's not long ago that a had a full service on the gearbox and gear change and selection are smooth and precise. Whatever it is, does seem to be causing any problems but I'm concerned this is just a warning for something more serious. Anyone any ideas or come across a similar problem? Many thanks.

Have you checked the viscous fan mounted on the front of the engine?

Over time, the viscous coupling wears and may need to be replaced.

Hi Charles

Thanks for the reply. I haven't checked the fan coupling but I will. If I can't work it out, I'll wait until it goes into Lee Shannon for the Oil Service and get him to have a look. I guess I'm checking for any play in the coupling itself?
