Retain the Electrochromic door mirrors Y/N?

Post by JohnW » Sat Sep 16, 2023 3:06 pm

I’ve got the S430A option electrochromic (auto dimming) wide-angle door mirrors from factory.

Now the passenger side has started to go. A used glass is almost £100, which shocked me a little.

Would you go for a used replacement to keep what was specified from factory or change both for a standard blue glass wide-angle pair? Both would be genuine and heated of course. For me it doesn’t seem really worth it.

The only cosmetic difference is that the dividing line is dotted rather than solid.

(I already have the auto dimming rear view mirror with remote buttons for my garage door which is useful for me)

Might be worth a chat with Mirrorjohn.com - he's pretty well known on E39/E46 forums for dealing with the auto-dip mirrors.

Thanks for the tip, I’ve emailed him now, looks like he charges around the same for his replacement mirror glasses though. No mention of the E90 range, fingers crossed.

Oddly BMW call these mirror lenses.

John has replied quickly and unfortunately that type can’t be repaired so I’m back to square one. But thanks for the info, I hadn’t heard of him before now.

I had a bit of good luck with this.

I found a general car breaker on eBay selling a complete E87 passenger door mirror for £22 and it was clear at that price didn’t realise it was electrochromic (or is it electrochromatic?) glass.

Anyway, it cleaned up very nicely, fitted and as good as new 🙂
