Wheel Centre Cap Key

Post by Howiez » Mon Feb 14, 2022 12:14 pm

Unfortunately the centre cap key has snapped, I’ve managed to extract the broken part from the wheel lock and have the original key number. Does anyone know where I can obtain a replacement key from using the key number?
Thanks

Not sure if this helps at all.

I took my broken key (both bits) to a really old school cobbler shop. He made me a new key from the two broken parts for £4. Saved me a heap of money.

Thanks. I’ve lost the cut, bottom element of the key so nothing to copy unfortunately.

I've had some fun and games with centre cap locks and keys recently (viewtopic.php?f=38&t=25858) and from what I can tell these are your options:

1. Any BMW dealer should be able to order you a new key from Alpina using your existing key number. Not many will know hoe to (or so I am told) so you may need to ring a few. Price = £Unknown and delivery is 8 weeks based on my experience.

2. You can order a new key from Alpina via Alloy Wheels Direct using the code and the price is £37, which is slightly more than the price of a new key and lock. There seems to be an error with P&P charges though, as that comes up as £27 which clearly isn't the cost of shipping a key.

You should have four centre cap keys though, one for each centre cap but presumably you only have the one key and that is the one that is broken? If not, then the simplest/cheapest/fastest option is to have a new one cut from one of the others.

Good luck!

Long shot but have you checked in the boot - toolkit or in the wheel well?

There’s a dealer on eBay making the keys up by their number if you can wait:

I ordered a new key from Alloy Wheels Direct when I needed a new badge after loosing one.

The keys must be made from the most mailable metal known to man as the new key is already bent as bad as the old one, this must surely be the key point in Alpina Tax

Thanks for the advice, I may try this, or alloy wheels direct. The Centre wheel caps are one of the few Alpina flaws really.

I have used Ebay seller key-king for a replacement key for my e65 B7. Shipping from Australia to USA took a while during the pandemic, but the key worked perfectly.

Let has just arrived, quite promptly really, considering it’s from Australia! Thanks for the help.

Good news, I have them cut (3x copied from Timpsons) and then use the cut keys in the car, saving the originals as you said they are very soft.

Thread reveal
John can post a pic of the key used as the duplicate back and front . I’m sure many years ago I had a key cut on a previous car with the same logo
Timpson say 9 quid a key closest match but can’t guarantee it will work?

Cheers

I haven’t got the Timpsons cut keys as I treated myself and swapped all the locks for a matched set of 4 and sold the old ones on eBay.

However I’m sure that’s the make of blank they used, and they also guaranteed it would fit or they wouldn’t charge me. I bought 3 as it was discounted for around £14 IIRC. I think it depends who you get. The first guy who was in suggested I brought it back the following day as the key ‘guru’ was in on rota then. Sure enough I had the 3 cut by him the next day and they all fitted without any issues.

It’s best to leave one of the centre caps or a lock with them, so they have no excuses, or bring it along with you to try, then you won’t have to return if it doesn’t work.
