N57 EGR & Swirl flap issue

Post by Trilly-Uk » Sat Jun 19, 2021 12:42 pm

My 96k miles D4 been out of action for past few weeks while at Sytner Sunningdale. It went in early June due to a sudden loss of power above 2500rpm.

After investigating with Carly and poking around the engine discovered the EGR actuator had been connected following EGR recall work in January. Carly reported swirl flap issue.

Had a lot of to and fro’ing with Service Delivery manager at Sytner Sunningdale who made no excuses for issue with EGR but advised issue with power loss due to inlet manifold and swirl flap issue. Although the EGR actuator wasn’t connected it will run in a default mode so wouldn’t be the cause of the swirl flap/egr issues, I am told.

The car has always been serviced to schedule AND had EGR checks and replacement carried out when needed. So the question is what caused the issue remains unanswered.

Sytner contacted BMW for a contribution to costs. In the end BMW offered 30% towards cost of inlet manifold. Sytner reduced the labour rate, to acknowledge issue with EGR. However still a hefty bill for work as it needed a decoke as well.

I am a troubled that a 96k car properly serviced and recalls carried out on time suffers this issue. Surely that’s the point of the checks/recall?

As an aside a few weeks ago I let a few people know contact at Sytner Sunningdale, he has left now! I know have a new contact and he is happy I pass his personal contact details for anyone wanting to talk Alpina. He gets they are different and need looking after. Interestingly Sunningdale do not have an Alpina specialist, which doesn’t surprise me but might for some people.

Glad the D4 is back on the road, the issue had been there a while as a lot smoother pulling from a standing start and moving. So happy but also a bit perturbed had the issue in the first and out of pocket for something other than what I think could be reasonably be expected but maybe around 90k it’s work that does need to be done to prevent damage?

I was thinking of dropping a letter/email to Alpina and asking them for their thoughts?
