Brake lights staying on
Brake lights staying on
Just got most of the servicing/niggles sorted on #047 B10 Touring and then along comes another issue.
Took it for a decent 60 mile run yesterday and on way it pinged up “check brake lights” - bulb I thought. When I checked, all 3 brake lights were on without me touching brake pedal ?
Guess it could be faulty pedal switch? When I got home it was ok and brake lights behaving themselves.
Seems to be intermittent fault - which are the worse

Re: Brake lights staying on
Sounds like your brake light switch is sticking on. It's mounted via a clip or two onto the brake pedal. First thing I'd do on a seldomly used car with this issue is unclip it and clean it (all simple stuff: online tutorial can help if necessary), then replace. If the fault comes back, replace the switch. £20 covers it.

Re: Brake lights staying on
I had this problem on the m3, turns out it was the contacts on the light cluster. Although there was absolutely no sign of rust a little rub with Emery on the contact points of the bulb, a little squeeze of the earth lugs and the problem went away.

Re: Brake lights staying on
Had it today to my independent bmw garage.
Also coming on were a couple of cluster yellow warning lights
They diagnosed faulty pedal switch which is connected to the other warning lights.
Diagnosis, OEM part, labour & vat about £100 so that’s ok.

Re: Brake lights staying on
We shouldn’t talk about faults like this. Mine came out in sympathy with the little picture of the car on the dash lit up intermittently with brake lights (both) on. Brake lights worked as they should. Finally found the fault to be triggered by a bad connection on one of the number plate lights. Presume they are somehow interlinked to point one to that area.

Re: Brake lights staying on
That was a good bit of detective work. Replacement of a switch must be a cinch compared to finding a faulty connection / wire
Mind you, I got lucky finding a broken wire in the tailgate loom that was preventing the tailgate latch working.

Re: Brake lights staying on
Well my detective work is more in the Inspector Clouseau category. After 15 minutes this morning the warning is on again. On/off as you drive along, like a loose wire or bad solder joint. So next plan is to change the number plate light cluster, simply because I have one and it’s easy to do. If that doesn’t work then I’ll dip into the piggy bank for a switch.

Re: Brake lights staying on
Turns out the number plate light cluster I have is not quite the right shape but plugs in fine. Gets rid of the warning lights so I set to taking the original one to bits. The wiring connections to the bulb holders are in a complete mess and two wires disconnected on removal, probably accounts for the on/off nature of the fault. Spent the afternoon cleaning filing and soldering and will fit it tomorrow. I could just buy a new one but where’s the fun in that.

Re: Brake lights staying on
Binned the soldering idea, when I looked at it this morning it looked awful, all green and corroded, although it worked it was a fault waiting to show up. So removed the wiring loom from the spare one and fitted it into the corroded one. No green no corrosion and hopefully no future faults.
