flat battery - nice display of yellow lights

Post by woolley11 » Tue Apr 06, 2021 2:26 pm

Ok - pulled up outside this shop to get some provisions. Jumped back into the B10and nothing. Got a friend with jump pack to me and it started fine.

On way home (about 1mile) I had a nice array of warning lights - yellow triangle with “!” and ABS light on too.

Felt like it was jumpy as well. Managed to get home, pulling into driveway it stalled. Got glass tailgate open to check battery to put on charge as a first thought (disconnected earth strap first). I think the live terminal connector was vaguely loose which could account for the non start but what about the slight missing and warning lights when running - could this be due to the terminal lead being loose too?

Tightened terminal and it’s fine - starts on key first turn 🤔

any issue with the battery and these throw a hissy fit, like its BMW counterpart the battery and power supply needs to be top notch.

mind you I'd keep an eye on it as thats also a sign of a failing alternator, now thats fun watching things switch off whilst you're driving as the car tries to conserve power until you are able to stop and be recovered.

Hmmmm. Some one else with E39 B10 Touring electrical issues. See What did you do in your ALPINA today?

I wonder if I should try a jump start. I bought a NOCO Boost Plus GB40 jump starter pack at Christmas. I think I'll give it a go.

Hi Toasey

My problem came out the blue, as fine one minute and then nothing, completely nothing - not even the radio would work. When I did first get the car, the battery was flat and it took a couple of days on and off to charge up, but it was fine afterwards.

I’ve charged it this afty and the green light came on the charger suggesting it’s fully charged.

I’ll try it tomorrow again - have tightened the 10mm nuts on the terminals as far as I dare. See what happens but does knock your confidence in will it “get home” ??

Hopefully I’ve resolved it but time will tell. I’ll take some jump leads with me next time - just in case.

Hi woolley,

I've updated the what I did on my Alpina today thread with my success with the NOCO GB40.

Everything seems alright again but, as you say, you get suspicious, certainly until you are sure you know what the root problem was.
