E39 B10 New front tyres. What do you recomend
Hello
I need to replace the front tyres on my B10. They are very old (I've recently discovered) Michellin 18" 235 x40's and am wondering if I might be able to fit 235 x 45's to them to try to reduce the road noise. I had intended to try the wheels from my E39 touring sport out on it, but just haven't had/made the time to do it!
Do you have any recommendations?
Kind regards
Andrew

Changing the profile would change the wheel/tyre diameter and have a knock-on effect to the speedo reading.
Newer rubber - such as Michelin PS4 - would probably give you an improvement in road noise.

I have PS4s on the same setup as you and don’t notice road noise.

Thank you both for your thoughts. I'd also heard good things about the Michelin PS4s so I'll give them a try.

Re: E39 B10 New front tyres. What do you recomend
For info Andrew I was surprised at how much noise the tyres generated on my B10 the first time I drove down a country lane with the drivers window open. At the time the tyre noise seemed a lot louder than my previous E34 sport model. As it was over 18 years ago I cannot remember which generation of Michelin Pilot Sports were fitted but I guess i got used to them after a while.
As your tyres are old that could well be part of the problem or possibly as you are using two different E39 models it keeps highlighting it to you?
You really need to do the wheel swap and report back to us.

Thank you for your and thoughts on the tyre noise. The noise I get on certain road surfaces is a pretty high frequency, almost splashy/drumming sound (except drumming sort of suggests low frequency, which this isn't!) then all goes quiet on a good smooth surface. And this is with the windows shut.
You are right when you say I ought to try that test of swapping the wheels over from my Touring, but I'm still in full-time employment, despite my age, and haven't yet made the time to do so! Another member on here even offered to do a comparison with his B10 V8, but I've not made the time to do that either.
I do however really need to get those tyres changed at the front as I farely recently discovered that one is from the mid 2000's and the other a couple of years later (from memory).
Kind regards
Andrew

Hello Abanko
Having done a bit more research. I haven’t yet found anyone who stocks a Michelin PS4s in 235mm x 40mm x 18”. Are you running on 18” rims or 19”, where the choice appears to be wider?
Kind regards

Hello Everyone
Thank you all for your help and recommendations on the tyre issue. In the end, I got Michelin Pilot Sports and they've made a big difference to noise levels in the car, having got rid of 80% of the splashy drumming sound that I was getting with the old tyres.
Kind regards

I took my 3.2 for a 40 mile drive yesterday and I am convinced the tyres are louder than thay should be but I have not used the car very much of late.
I have Falken FK452's on there (I think ) and they are at least seven years old now and I have been considering changing them even though they have plenty of tread left. When I first had them fitted I thought the noise level was simlar to the Michelin's they replaced but maybe they have hardened with age?

Re: E39 B10 New front tyres. What do you recomend
Hello Jim
It may well be the age of the tyres that is giving you the loud road noise, although I have to say that my front tyres were mid-2000's so a lot older than yours. However I was really surprised what difference it's made, so I hope the fix of changing them works for you as well. What will you replace the Falkens with if you do go down this route?
Kind regards
