B10 coolant Hoses

Post by Abanko » Sun Mar 07, 2021 7:28 pm

Hi
It’s coming up to 4 years now of having #842 and wondering if I need to be looking at changing any of the coolant hoses before they give up. I found a proactive maintenance schedule for a e39 540 and it suggested changing them every 4 years - any thoughts on this?

Are there any suggested upgrades to help address some of the cooling issues that can happen?

Thanks

I think it depends how old the current cooling system is and how many miles you do but 4 years sounds excessive even to OCD me :)

I replaced my cooling system when I bought my B10 in 2012 (rad/coolant tank/hoses) and haven't replaced any of those items since but I've only covered approx 30k miles in this time. Coolant has been changed maybe 3 times in this period.

There's the 88 degree thermostat you can fit if you don't like how hot the M62 runs but tbh I'm happy as is. Another mod that was highlighted on one of the forums was to replace the aux fan with an E53 one as it's a different design and 'might' help with cooling - I did this and I 'think' it might be helping.

With the M62 it's more a case of when not if the cooling system will fail but you need to assess your existing system, no point in replacing if it's newish and you only do a thousand miles a year!
