F11 D5 BiTurbo - #162

Post by Paul0568 » Thu Feb 25, 2021 2:48 pm

I have now had my D5 Touring for two weeks and I am loving it! Alpina have done brilliant job of combining performance, comfort and practicality. It is also more economical than I expected. The car has done a few long runs in the past two weeks and has averaged over 40mpg (reaching 46mpg on one run).

The car is now at Stratstone's Body Shop in Chesterfield. I took it over on Monday and they agreed that the minor corrosion on the top of the drivers door should be covered under warranty. There were a couple of other corrosion spots that are also being addressed. I have also decided to get both bumpers repainted to sort out some minor scuff marks and road rash. I am now driving around in a 218i Active Tourer until the paintwork is sorted.

My car was first registered in September 2014. The V5 shows it as emissions category Euro5b and it is not ULEZ compliant according to tfl online checker https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra- ... -zone/cars

I thought all LCI 5 series and 3 series BMW's were Euro6 and therefore ULEZ compliant. A quick check of Autotrader appears to confirm this for BMW 530d and 535d, and so does this website referring to the D5: https://www.auto-data.net/en/alpina-d5- ... onic-24240

Has anyone had a similar issue with a LCI D3 or D5?

Paul - your car will have the P1/1 engine which was also in the F3x D3/D4's. If you see this thread, MattOz figured out what needs to happen to get it recognised for ULEZ exception.

Good news your car is covered under the corrosion warranty :dance

Congrats OP, a lovely car and great news on the corrosion being sorted, fingers crossed you have a great experience with the bodyshop.

Interested in the ULEZ piece and what this meant for later cars. As I understand it the difference between Euro 5 and 6 is the NOx limit is very stringent and achieved through AdBlue. Am I correct in saying this?

Do these later D3/D5 cars have AdBlue?

I am not sure about the link between Euro 6 and AdBlue. I don’t think Alpina introduced AdBlue until the launch of the D5S.

I have read through the link that Bob kindly posted and have sent an email to Alpina. I’ll let you know what they say. I’ll be using the car for trips into London and with the ULEZ zone extending to the North Circular later this year I could do without the hassle and cost of paying £12.50 each trip.

I collected the car from Stratstone's Bodyshop on Friday afternoon. I am really pleased with the paintwork. Customer service was also excellent.

Next job is to replace the badges on the wheels. I am in two minds whether to go for a full set of Alpina decals or stick with the more subtle approach.

That looks fantastic Paul - it's a beautiful car. Glad they have done a good job on the bodywork for you.

I've recently refreshed the wheel badges on mine - you've probably seen, but they come with the rotating plastic carriers as well so it's worth doing. You can get them from AWD - give me a shout if you need part numbers etc.

It's a tough call on the decals. They look super classy without, but then they also look amazing with the full Alpina war paint.

I finally needed to refuel yesterday. 638.5 miles on one tank of diesel with 26 miles remaining (44.5 mpg calculated). The car is mainly used on motorways and fast A/B roads at 'sensible' speeds hence the impressive figures.

I spent 30 minutes cleaning the leather with Pears soap last weekend. The seats are now looking much fresher. The rears look as good as new. The drivers seat has a few creases, but not bad for 136K miles.

Those seats look amazing for the mileage Paul.

As for fuel economy, I filled my B5 up at the weekend. £85 for 185 miles. I don't bother looking at the mpg! To be fair it's doing a lot of short journeys at the moment with lockdown, and I do like to enjoy the performance when I go a bit further. Quite a contrast though.

What? That’s E9x M3 territory. You must have a binary accelerator
