Steering Wheel refurb - Royal not available

Post by Raj » Tue Sep 15, 2020 8:52 pm

Hey, I know the guys at Royal seem to be no.1 for this but they aren't able to do my E46 B3 atm. Wondering if there is someone else good enough or should I just wait.

I emailed Josh at royal but no reply recently.

Cheers

Google MPM trimming LTD, they can replicate the parallel stitching on the steering wheel that Royal can’t.

This was posted in one of the FB Groups. Apparently they are able to faithfully replicate the ALPINA loop stitch

Not sure if John at Bespoke Leathering is still doing individual wheels, but he recovered the B3 wheel on my previous car, correct stitching and all.

UPDATE -

I got intouch with Matt at MPM Trimming, seems like a nice chap and can do the correct stitching and work. Need your opinions on the quote though.

I've asked for a quote on retrim with alpina stitching, wheel made slightly thicker, perforated leather on the sides and augmentations added at 10 and 2. A lot I know. The inspiration came from a few wheels done by Royal. You can see them here - http://royalsteeringwheels.com/bmw-3-series/, and I have attached a couple pictures.

This is the Royal quote -
"It’d be:E46 Alpina B3 3.3 (with Button shift) - Slightly Thicker, Perforated leather on sides, Smooth top/bottom, Alpine Blue 1078 & Green 1314 stitching + ARROWS- Originally
The price would be £165 (incl. VAT) + £9.99 Postage (Parcelforce next day recorded) and we would need between 1 and 2 weeks to do so. We would also keep you updated so you know when to expect delivery. ( Please confirm if you still with Perforated on sides or smooth all around)"

This is MPM quote -
"I hope you are well, i've done a small trial of perforated leather with parallel stitching as promised (please see attached) and it does seem to work out, but i wouldn't want to do the whole wheel with it just the 10 and 2 positions,

Updated Quote with Perforated leather at 10 and 2 positions.

Estimate for OEM spec:

To Re-trim steering wheel back to Alpina OEM spec in black leather with twin parallel stitching in Alpina Green and Blue thread, with up/down shift arrows. £300.00
Plus £25 for Perforated leather at 10 and 2 positions. £325.00

Additional work/options:

If I find the rubber rim is de-laminated after i remove the original leather cover I charge an additional £50.00 to repair this, I will send you a video of any rubber de-lamination I find as proof before I make the repair,

Adding augmented shapes to your wheel at the 10 and 2 positions. £100.00

Making the rim thicker.£50.00
"

I appreciate that the correct stitching is worth paying more for and that Matt has tested the stitching on the perforated leather, and that he recommended not to do perforation leather down the whole side. But I could do with others opinion on whether this is an ok price. It seems expensive to me considering the quote from Royal. Especially the augmentation and thickness being as much as the whole quote from Royal. Turning it on it's head, assuming the Royal quote from everything upto the stitching (retrim, thickness, augmentaton), having the correct stitching works out to being £310 (325+100+50-165)... and possible an extra £50 for delamination.

Matt did make a point that the stitching on the pictures for the up/down shifters is poor, I agree, so there is that attention to detail too to consider maybe. Should I get another quote?

Thanks all.

Personally I've never had a steering wheel retrimmed so I have no context for what would be reasonable pricing, that said, there is a massive difference between those prices so I would be confirming explicitly what is and isn't included to make sure you're like for like. Otherwise as you say, try and find another quote for comparison.

I don't really think the perforated leather looks right on an ALPINA wheel but I think it would look even stranger just having the thumb rest sections perforated. That is your decision though.

Thanks CaesarBob. I agree about the perforated leather just at 10 and 2. Will most likely ditch that if going with MPM. And may ditch it all together if the arrows are too difficult to do.

As I am using the car as a daily driver, I just wanted something more modern but not over the top, like a stripe at 12. Just something to bring the driving experience into 2020 and not be offensive to the mark. What do you think about the augmentations and thickness?

I'm probably the wrong person to ask as I'd pretty much always choose standard over modified, or at least OEM.

I've never really found thumb rests to be of much practical value in other cars I've owned as I naturally favour a 9/3 position, the B3 doesn't have them and I don't miss them. The rim thickness is an option on later ALPINAs anyway so no issues with that, if it feels more natural for you go or it.

I appreciate the viewpoint. It's nice to hear anyone's opinion that understands Alpina's.
