Advice around a B10 v8 #190

Post by hafthorr » Tue Jul 18, 2023 6:33 pm

Hi everyone

I am currently looking for a e39 based alpina at relatively low (entry) cost with the idea of long term ownership and regular use.

found the b10 v8 #190 on autotrader, and it kinda seems to click all the right checkboxes but wanted to see it anyone maybe knows the car and/or has any advice in general.

My budget is relatively modest, and I am not scared of working on my cars if that makes any difference.

very long time alpina admirer :)

Just bear in mind that a low entry cost doesn't equate to a low cost to maintain and use.

Thats nice car, great spec, love that interior but std e39 checks should be done as well being aware of the pitfuls around that M62 motor. But do your research, go in eyes open and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Having owned one for 10 years I'd say buy one, just bear in mind that it will have had or will have all the faults a BMW E39 suffers over time, the Alpina mods are not an issue unless you want to replace the suspension etc than it might get a bit more expensive. Advert says £19k spend but doesn't give any info on what has been done apart from a detail..... Chain guides might be your biggest concern at 164k miles which is a £3k job unless you're pretty competent, cooling system of course on the V8, and obviously rust is the other E39 achilles heel so take a good look at the sills and arches.

The B10 is a great car but it does need ongoing tlc to keep it in top condition but I'd recommend a good one, and there is always a few available so take your time and choose the right one - good luck.
