G30 D5S <3Years "Needs To Be On Radar"

Post by D5R+ » Thu Dec 24, 2020 4:23 pm

After a number of Mercedes E Class(es) have the E400D on my list (couple of years old) as rack up 25,000miles/year whilst commuting.

Never owned a BMW but am drawn to Alpina 5 series.

Have 3 key questions with which need help/advice from the "more learn-ed" forum folk:
  • are there any respected service specialists along the M62/M60 corridors (prefer indies over main dealer).
  • has anyone figured out a pricing guide, given the prices are all over the place - so many cars seem to stick around, even though there must be genuine buyers around
  • what is the typical annual service cost given that could need a couple per year, if cover 25K/miles

Servicing on the D5S is very straight forward - no different to the standard 530d. Given the car will not be that old and the mileage you intend to cover I'd say it's a bit of false economy going out the dealer network.

Pricing Alpina is tricky as so few are around. Spec and mileage impact the cars greatly as does the value of the equivalent BMW model. They command a premium because they are rare and very fine cars and tend to hold value well. There os no pricing guide but there's a lot of threads on this forum of cars that come up for sale, well worth having a browse so you can see the values of cars being sold by dealers, private sellers and auctions.

Servicing cost is no different to the 530d so might be worth calling your local dealers for a menu pricing.

Appreciate the steer.

Am I correct in thinking that the European versions of the D5S have an extra ~60BHP and also ~100NM torque?

Not convinced that many dealers selling these cars know enough about the brand excepting of course Sytner.

Servicing via main dealer is a good advice and would consider if find the right car.

If anyone can point me toward in gear acceleration times would appreciate it ie 50-70/60-80/ 80-100/etc as these matter more to me than 0-62.

You are correct: 322bhp and 700NM from the reworked bi-turbo B57 in RHD cars versus 383bhp and 800NM from the tri-turbo B57 in the LHD cars - the difference apparently due to “engineering and packaging reasons”.

I can’t help with your other query. If Autocar have done a full road test (I don’t know that they have) then the numbers would be available in a back issue of which an electronic copy could be purchased.

.

Thanks for the times (hap) and data(Jonny).

Owned three E Classes over the last decade and they are great motorway cars. Only originally ended up in a Mercedes as BMW salesperson too busy to speak with me. :!:

The E400D is an easy decision for me, do not even have to drive one, would buy one knowing exactly what to expect. However, do I spend another £10-15K and go for a D5S (actually, I am stupid enough to buy blind if the correct specification appeared). Always buy preowned given my mileage and depreciation. Logically I should buy a 520D or E220D but if that was my thought..............would never be considering an Alpina. :)

Acknowledge that this is a nice car but think it overpriced. Also, 3 years down the line with 90K miles suspect would be worth £20something - which is too much of a hit for me.

That dealer picked this up at BCA Preston back in July and overpaid in my mind, they're in it for close to £50k with fees and other expenses plus now they've got 6mths of forecourt stocking on top.

Thanks Bob. Had missed the EBay car - shows that need to put aside my EBay misconceptions.

Great input on #014.
