G21 D3S vs G21 B3 - A Financial Arguement
Re: G21 D3S vs G21 B3 - A Financial Arguement
Hi all,
I just thought I would bump up this thread to see if anyone is willing to share what GMFV they have been quoted after 4 years, on a G21 D3S or B3. I do appreciate this will be affected by the miles covered during the term and the fact that some options may marginally improve the GMFV. I understand BMW are currently offering 4.9% APR on new models?
I wasn't planning to change my F31 so soon, but I wanted to have a play around with numbers first before bothering Sytner. I was planning to pick up a used example in 2-3 years, but if used values remain relatively strong, which I think they might for these cars, it might make more sense to order a new car to my preferred spec and enjoy it. Thankfully Alpina Green seems like a popular colour choice so far, so there is hope if I do hold out for a used example.
Cheers.

G21 B3 on order (should be arriving next week ). I've actually forgotten the exact numbers but assuming you're not sensitive to errors of a couple hundred either way, the GMFV after 4 years, £8k miles (the minimum BMWFS will consider) on a car totalling a tick under £78k with options is £28k.CB 987 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 11:38 amHi all,

I assume BMWFS have been extremely conservative with that figure based on the various uncertainties going on in the world; that being said, the figure is crap for a potential customer. It doesn't bother me because the one thing I won't be doing is handing the car back after four years. Estimating what the thing will actually be worth on the open market in four years is an exercise for somebody more knowledgable than me, but I'd wager it'll be more than £28k for a well looked after car in a decent spec and in a non-offensive colour.
Yes the finance APR figure is 4.9%. Even as a hypothetical cash buyer, the finance kind of makes sense at that APR since a lump sum up to the value of the car could be invested and expected to gain more than the cost of the loan over the term (and beyond, with compounding) IMO. Of course, others' mileages may vary.

My D3 S Touring on order:
List £60,190
After 4 years and 32K miles it will have a GFV of £26,702.90. That's with BMWFS.
Still debating the actual deposit to put in, but the GFV is unchanged irrespective of whatever I elect to do.

Re: G21 D3S vs G21 B3 - A Financial Arguement
As far as I'm aware the specc has little bearing in the GFV. I've made several changes and never has this resulted in a change to the GFV.
I doubt very much a finance house would award a car with 20" classics, Alpina Green and full Lavalina a higher GFV than one without these options. At the end of the day, If they get the car handed back (and they will be BMWFS, not the dealer) it will ultimately be sent to auction.
In mainstream BMW land, especially with the different navs and packages etc, they can easily factor some options as being more desirable (at auction, and ultimately in the market) and thus can adjust GFV accordingly. But for Alpina, it makes no sense.
To be honest, BMWFS never want handle a car, especially an Alpina. Hence they strive to ensure the GFV is set so there is always equity at the end of the term, and hence you buy-then-sell it or P/Ex it.
By way of comparison, on Porsche the only option that affects GFV is whether or not the car is an automatic (i.e. PDK). All other options are paid in full (plus interest over the term). This is the way BMWFS seem to work it with Alpina.

My D3 S is going to be Alpina Green, but not sure if I'm going to be selling it when its 2-3 years old. Sorry.CB 987 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 11:38 amHi all,

Re: G21 D3S vs G21 B3 - A Financial Arguement
From my days in Leasing and Remarketing, there was generally no RV adjustment to account for specific options on cars unless it was a truely bespoke vehicle. In 6yrs I only recall 2 such vehicles and that was due to the colours combo being ‘undesirable’. LCV’s were a whole other thing though.

Re: G21 D3S vs G21 B3 - A Financial Arguement
I have just gone through the D3 / B3 decision myself this month.
You can’t look at the residual GFMV to understand market depreciation, it’s only relevant if you want / intend to hand the car back as it sets the cost for the period. Alpinas tend to beat their GFMV from what I can see.
The BMWFS machine is dumb and just sets a % (about 36% for me at 4 years / 8k yr) based on the lease factors. So the D3 and B3 are the same % but from a higher base price. The extra £13k for the B3 gets 36% of that added to GFMV over the D3.
Dealers can apply for a manual GFMV uplift on cars with med/high options but it’s rarely offered or done but possible if you ask. Rate goes up in Feb to 5.5% from current 4.9%.
As I have other cars which are older and more characterful engine wise (E39 M5 for one) I went for the D3 as the £13k didn’t make sense for me and I do low mileage and short trips. Each to their own though.
LCI D3S touring in green over oyster incoming Nov 22. Can’t wait. Other than the i4 electric Satnav and some updated lights still not sure what the LCI brings but we shall see!
