D3 (High Mileage) Buying info / recommendations

Post by paddockboy » Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:42 am

Hi,
Well Ive been away from this forum for some time, as Ive been without an Aplina since 2008.

I used to own a D3 Build No. 184 on a 56 plate when they first came out and loved every minute of it. I chopped it in with about 40K on the clock for a 530d M Sport as I needed more space and wanted a better spec.

Anyways, I'm thinking about getting another D3 but I dont want to spend silly money (although I paid £25,995 new for my old one), but are concerned about the high mileage examples. 60-80K.

Plus there is the big pull of a 330d M Sport with all the goodies that will be on par to the 5 series - anyway thats a different thread.

I have heard some stories of turbos going etc., but was wondering what issues people have had with higher mileage cars and any recommendations or thing to look out for?

cheers[/b]

You don't mention a budget, but ALPANDY just chopped in his 23k mile D3 at Hill Moren, and that's £16495:-

Plenty of good, non-high-miles D3's around for below £15k.

Not heard much in the way of turbo failures on D3's. Just DPF problems.
Current:
23MY Porsche Macan GTS in Papaya
23MY Cupra Born V3 77kW in Aurora

Previously loved:

PORSCHE: Macan S, Cayman 981 S, Cayman 981 GTS

My D3 BT is now 3 years old and just about to hit 60k miles (yeah - I drive it!) and it hasn't missed a beat so far.

There's one for sale at the moment on this site which has suffered turbo failure

I wouldn't think that it's any more likely than a 'normal' diesel turbo unit, although the boost is pretty high on these things.

I won't pass comment incase I jinx myself

I traded in my D3MT when it reached 100k, didn't miss a beat in the 3 1/2 years I owned it. Bent a couple of rear wheels and a heat shield running over a workman's boot, but nothing engine wise apart from fbmwsh.

Would check for DPF replacement on the service indicator and factor that into the price you are prepared to pay. Rumoured to be £1k for main dealer to do the work.

Just as an example, I didn't imply you should look at that one to buy. Although, if I had an empty garage I'd be tempted....

Generally the E90 320d is pretty much bullet proof
