My G30 M5 was a brilliant car - I bought the last of the pre competition only models at massive discount - but the ride even pre comp was too firm on the country roads near me and lacked the subtlety of the B5 and the noise was always angry and a bit industrial - I am fortunate to have owned a few XKR’s and love the V8 noise - the B5 sounds more traditional V8 to me but is there in the background until you prod it rather than upfront all the time as in the M5 if that makes sense. My F10 M5 was a total lemon sadly and a disaster - swapped for a 40d X5 after 12 months.
Thanks for sharing and totally makes sense. The differences you highlight are classically how the B5 differs from the M5 with ride, noise and subtlety.
I think the gap between B and M has narrowed with the current 5 though, but clearly it’s still there.

I think the all wheel drive helps too - this is a bit off topic but I put my winter Alpina wheels/tyres on the M5 making my own Hybrid! The ride was slightly better than before over broken tarmac (the occasional manhole cover no different that I could tell) - I weighed the wheels and tyres - the “lightweight” M 20s are not forged whereas the Alpina ones are - tyres had similar wear - the overall difference added up to 21.5 kilos of unsprung mass reduction with the Alpina wheels - the rear tyres are the same 285s for both but the M fronts 275 whereas Alpina fronts 255 which will make a slight difference to the weights as shown by the front difference of 6 kilos per wheel whereas the rears are 4.75 kilos per wheel. I think part of the Alp specification on the Pirelli tyres is for a slightly more forgiving sidewall to the tyres which may help too. Foolishly I sold the winter wheels and tyres with the M5! :(

Very interesting! I'm sure the wheel weight and tyre combo will indeed have an affect.
M5 looks great on the wheels! 8)
Unusual colour for the M5 too is it Bluestone?

Yes bluestone - I had a real battle with sales as they were pushing Donnington as an M colour but I prefer blue greys to brown greys and to me it matched the Silverstone merino better and looked (a bit) more subtle.

That's easily the nicest M5 I've seen - that colour along the the Alpina wheels is a fantastic combination.

Spotted this post the other day, looks like the original owner of #340 upgraded to a very similarly spec'd LCI B5, #642

Yes, he ordered the same paint again - love the LCI look - interesting he put the stripes on as they were not on mine when I bought it - now on and looks much better with them I think.
