1 series O2 sensor query

Post by hap » Fri Aug 14, 2015 2:52 pm

Rough starting in morning intermittent no fault codes except O2 sensor my mech thinks this wouldn't cause rough starts
No other codes of timing etc
Will be 200 to change n no guarantee it will solve it

Any advice please

Hi,
On older models it made no difference to cold running as the sensor had to warm up first.
I've got no experience of the 1 series though..
Have you got access to diagnostic gear to check live data from cold start up?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Thanks Gavin I don't but it's had only O2 sensor going bad or something like that it's 2004 car they cleared it and came back with O2 nothing about coils or misfire codes but as it gets colder it will struggle massively as we ain't even in winter and frosty mornings

I think you've got to start there really, I had a bit of a google which suggests a bad pre-cat O2 sensor can give the symptoms you're experiencing but nothing concrete.

If that's the only fault code you're seeing I can only suggest fixing it and then going from there. Either way if it's throwing a code on the sensor then it needs replacing. :(

Thanks I just have a feeling I'll do it and the cold starts will still be an issue but guess may need to do it to rule it in or out
Thanks all

Normal day to day is fine only on damp coldish mornings but it's never had a warning light either which doesn't help diagnostics

Hi,
Not all fault codes will put the light on. Might be worth getting the codes read again...
Cheers,
Gavin:)

Been thinking about this, and it depends on what the O2 sensor code is. Sounds almost like an intermittent air leak, that could throw the O2 sensor reading out. What's the exact fault code? The O2 sensor might not actually be failing, might just be reading outside of the range.

If the pre-cat and post-cat O2 sensors are the same part then swapping them might be the way to go - if the fault doesn't follow the sensor then it's not a sensor issue.

I would also agree that an air leak seems the likely culprit

You can try spraying "Easy Start" on your pipes and around your gaskets. As soon as you notice a rise in engine revs you have found the air leak :D

Hi,
Looking at your post again you say it was missing, then you switched it off and restarted it.
Did it run cleanly from the moment you restated it?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

More updates
Few cold start probs dying revving nothing happening but partner said at junction stopped and went to go and car had cut out no lights on dash
Today the yellow engine light came on and she has told me leaving work the light has stayed on

Could it still be O2 sensor
