Ali's E30 C2 Touring Replica Project
Last summer my old trusty E30 Sport with the 2.8 lump was diagnosed with terminal rust and had to be retired off.
My E30 specialist friend Boyd came for a look at it and confirmed that out of all the places an E30 can rust my sport had it in all of those places and some others never seen before
That led to a deal being struck for Boyd to scrap the sport for me and I took ownership of this Touring shell
Its as solid as an E30 25 year old shell can be , only needing a few bits of attention.
The plan was to throw all the running gear from the Sport into it
That was until I accidentally bought an E36 M3 Evo saloon
Plan B was then hatched to built it with the Evo running gear.
Everything was stripped off the shell to see exactly how good it was
Boyd fabricated a special wee E30 trolly for easy manoeuvring in and out of the workshop
On the whole the shell was really sound. A wee dod of rust next to the A pillar that would usually get filled with P38 got proper attention
As did the ropey front valance
The car shell has been waxoiled and sealed underneath and isn't too far off going in for paint round 1 to get the engine bay, door checks etc painted before we get the Evo running gear in it Then it will go off for a glass out respray in either zinnobar or Hellrot red for paint round 2. Various bit and bobs of suspension are away getting powdercoated at the moment too and I have managed to source a cracking black leather sport interior for it with rear headrests too
Progress is at a pace as and when Boyd has any slow time and can squeeze a few hours here and there.
I'm not in any particular hurry to do this as it is getting done right and should make a proper sleeper when completed

Well the shell has been slow progress but it had been totally stripped right back and away for a new coat of helrot paint. subframe parts away to the powdercoaters for some black covering.
In the mean time I got impatient of not havin another E30 on the go so picked up a different 325i wagon to keep the miles off no 108

So the E30 has been in great fettle and the S38 just sings like a messerschmitt
Mechanically sorted and completely sound so I wondered which direction to take it in.
Bough a complete Tech II bodykit including the extremely rare roof spoiler to go on the car. I was about to go 5 stud all round and had E36 M3 evo front struts and a compact back end to go on but decided against it as it would mean running 17" wheels to clear the brakes which really would ruin the ride of an E30.
Today I got a call from another E30 loving friend to say he was selling up and did I want 1st dibs on a genuine set of 5 wheels E30 4 stud staggered Alpina wheels with 4 new tyres that had just been fully refurbished , a genuine Alpina E30 steering wheel and gear nob too.
I thought it would be rude not to so that is the direction that the car will go.
I will try and recreate in my eyes homage to my ultimate E30 touring
The finished article will have a mix of tech II kit and Alpina kit. I won't badge it as a C2.7 as it is not especially with the 3.6 litre M5 engine but I will try and source a genuine front splitter to replace the fibreglass one I have and when I decide on a final colour a full respray then get her striped up on the sides and front valance.
As usual with me it won't happen overnight but will be a slow burning project over the next year .
Hopefully finished result should look sort of like this but still unsure which colour to go for

Yes lachs silverMetrics wrote:Wow, lovely car Ali - must be a real rocket with that lump.
I think it looks like the ultimate subtle sleeper as it is. Is it Lachs Silver?
Might keep it that colour and go with dark blue Alpina stripes.
Quick does not describe it.
Pushing 340 bhp in something weighing not a lot makes for terrifying acceleration, The S38B36 lump really comes alive 5-7.5k rpm and the car will eat most modern cars alive without even thinking about it.
Where areas permit its 80-130 mph is incredible for a 30 yo car with a 30 yo engine
Great fun and puts a smile on my face every time I go out
