B10 burning oil

Post by martybmw3 » Wed Nov 08, 2006 10:52 pm

Hi,

I was hoping someone may have an idea why my B10 is using so much oil. It is a 2000 year 3.3 touring and i have covered about 1500 miles so far and it has managed to burn about 2.5 litres of oil, this seems very excessive to me. I have had my local garage check it for all the obvious leaks etc and all seems fine. They did suggest maybe changing to a heavier weight oil, it currently runs on 0/30 Mobil 1. Any help or advice would be very welcome.

Thanks,

Martyn

Hi Martyn,

There is a known problem with c2000 6 cylinder engines fitted to B10's - they use oil at a higher rate than other engines.

ALPINA recommend a change of oil spec to Castrol TWS 10w-60

Hi Martyn,
I have owned a B10 3.3 1999 for just over 2 years now and I average between 500-600 miles a litre. I do find it annoying on long trips that you have to remember to put a litre container in the boot. I got caught out last year when I put a litre in for the trip to Gaydon, the following week we went to Devon & I had to find a Halfords in Newton Abbot to buy some more.
I switched from Castrol SLX to TWs but did not notice any significant differance and have now purchased 4 litres of Castrol Edge [SLX replacement].

I wasn't being awkward - I wanted to respond but even after an exhaustive attempt at trying different keys on the keyboard near to M, E & R, I still couldn't work it out.

Any clues Jacoda434?

I honestly believe it's cost per mile... considering that Kevin was taking on the post before about 500-600 miles per litre...

Hi Kev, I had an oil service in December changing to Edge 0/30 up to now it looks like the consumption has improved, will post after next top up.

10/60

I had the same problem in my B10 3.3, Castrol 10/60 was what Alpina recommended and went from high consumption to vitrually none.

M5 was using Castrol 10/60 and a lot 1 litre for 500 miles had an oil flush and changed @ BMW to LLO4 all was good,
