Spoiler

Post by MikeR » Sun Sep 11, 2022 10:57 pm

Hi
I went to look at a 3rd gen 2005 MX5 for sale today.
This one had some things going for it, but one “problem”. It’s got an after market rear solid spoiler colour coded - and the paint is flaking. I’m guessing painting it would be quite tricky. Anyone know how difficult it is to remove a bonded spoiler, and what the chances of the paintwork underneath surviving?
Cheers

Quite possible it’s stuck with PU gunk from a cartridge such as sikaflex or tiger seal or with 3M double sided tape

If it’s on a flattish surface plenty of very hot water, use some thin fishing line or strong tooth floss and work it backwards and forwards on the join.

No exact science takes a lot of patience but gets there in the end then pick off the remnants by hand and I used cutting compound to finish off.

Thanks John.

I’ve done something similar rebadging in the past, just nervous about the potential significantly higher amount of whatever adhesive type has been used.

I think worst case is if I got it off but it damaged the paint somehow, then I’d repair the spoiler then stick it back on! :)

In the end I bought my brother in law’s Honda S2000.
Great car, but a little tired - different sort of jobs required!

Fantastic car - I had one back in 2003 and loved it. Engine and gearbox are incredible. Enjoy!
