|Review:|| Well I spose it is all down to timing/opportunity. I was actually going to buy a Mercedes 320 SLK. But then we found out we were pregnant (well Sue was!) and so a 2 seater sports car seemed a pretty dumb idea. I had been on the waiting list for an SLK for 8 months. This was the normal 6 month wait + 2 months as I held out for the new 3.2 engine (230bhp). |
Anyhow when we cancelled the order my next thought was a 5 series BM. We had previously had a 523SE, and it is a cracking car and is also big enough for a family. I fancied something with a bit more power - but wasn't sure how much I wanted to spend.
We were pretty taken with a 528 sport (with the M kit) (or even the 535/540 - although the recirculating ball steering is a turn off). Anyhow we went down to Sytners and had a look - got into the usual conversations of 3 month waiting list. Just happen to be talking to one of sales guys next to the Alpina section. I joking asked about the Alpina - thinking they were way out of my price range - and my current car was sat there waiting.
The Alpina's are expensive new (compared with their humble BM equivalents), however are quite attractive nearly new as they are pretty good value for money. Especially in the bang for buck category. So there we were taking the Alp out for a test drive. Previously I had driven and automatic 528SE with Alpina suspension and hated it, however the real thing was far better and the suspension felt superb and the car 'went' very well. The brakes were phenominal and I was VERY taken with the car. The only down side was the colour- black, our 523 was black and I didn't really fancy another black car. However of all the Alpina B10's available (e.g. 2!) this was affordable the other was a big step up. So the decision was made.
