The BMW ALPINA B6 GT3’s first outing was clearly rated as a success at the ADAC GT Masters this past weekend at the Hockenheim Ring. The two young talents behind the wheel, Andreas Wirth (24) and Jens Klingmann (18), guided the bright green racer competently around the north Swabian racecourse.

For Jens Klingmann, who’d not yet driven a Touring Car race, this were his first two heats in a vehicle with a ”roof over his head”.

After a strong performance in the rain in training, Andreas Wirth garnered the 7th starting position for the 2nd heat on Sunday, during which the rains came only three laps into the race.

Even as many of the competitors stayed on profile-free slicks, betting on drying conditions, ALPINA bet on continued wet conditions and immediately made a quick pit stop, going to rain tyres. Andrea Wirth successfully the tricky and wet conditions, driving consistently quick laps up to the mandatory pit stop near half-way in the hour-long race. Jens Klingmann took over and the rookie gave an excellent account of himself as he overtook both the Kremer Ferrari 430 and the Ford GT driven by Lechner/Nygaard, landing the B6 GT3 in sixth place. This helped to make up for Jens’ Saturday, where he’d already put in a sterling performance in the first race, bringing the B6GT3 down pit lane in 2nd place for the mandatory pit stop. Then everything went wrong, as Klingmann couldn’t get Andreas Wirth’s safety belt to lock during the driver change. Mechanics jumped in to help, but not before the team went 30 seconds over the minimum pit stop time. 16th was the best the team could salvage at the end of the hour-long race. ”Frustrating, said team boss Andreas Bovensiepen, ”but this is our first season after 20 year of abstinence from motorsport.”
