| Review: | Can 737lb ft justify the £142,740 price tag Mercedes-Benz has put on the S65 AMG? or does the £66,740 cheaper ALPINA B7 make the scarier super-saloon? Ben Oliver lets them argue it out
New air-dam, boot spoiler and huge wheels transform ungainly 7-series into tough ALPINA B7
B7 hit 60mph in 4.8secs, in the wet; feelsome steering and adept, precise handling.
Ride better than B7's, but S65 feels detached and handling isn't as good.
You could argue that the S65 has a greater span of ability - from luxury at one end of the spectrum to insane performance at the other - than any car ever made. But see it in the context of its rivals, and the roads it has to be driven on, and it suddenly seems what an S-class has never been, until now: too expensive and slightly irrelevant. We'll take two B7s, please. | |
