So farewell!

Post by Charles » Mon Sep 20, 2010 9:13 am

Not quite as dramatic as it sounds but today is the first day of my new life.

In about 5 minutes I'm packing my satchel into the car and heading off to Reading University to start my one year PGCE course. Hopefully at the end of it I might be somewhat qualified to try and teach science at secondary school (including physics and chemistry all the way to A level) - but there are quite a few months of temptation between now and then - namely the Union Bar :!:

So, think of me as I roll up in the University car park in my ALPINA. :D

And if you are a regular M4 warrior then you should spot me at reasonable hours enjoying the delights of the A34/M4 between my place and Reading each day for the next little while.

As Captain Oates said: "I'm just going out and I may be some time ...."

Best of luck Charles, I'll keep an eye out for you. I guess you already know but if you have to use it M4 J11 has been a nightmare for the last year due to roadworks, although I think they're nearly done so hopefully things will improve.

Secondary school teacher.... respect due, not something I could do without ending up in prison for hurting the little darlings I suspect ;)

My wife is a primary school teacher and enjoys it, don't know how she does it!

Cheers,
John

Best of luck Charles, in your new vocation.
I did a lot of teaching/ training in a previous life and know how arduous it can be.
I would not like to do it full time.
Teaching would be a great job without the pupils
Looks like your B3S will clock up a lot more miles.
Let us know how you are getting on :D

Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Science... my top subjects at school.

The only reason I ended up doing what I do is because I had a crush on my accounts teacher

All the best Charles. I doubt I could go back to uni and survive; the other temptations beside the Union Bar would drive me to distraction :P

Thanks guys :D

The PGCE course is structured such that I get to spend a fair amount of time in schools (two of them to be exact), with the first placement starting next week (2 days a week until half term and then full time till Christmas).

Not sure whether to laugh or cry but my first placement school has been announced and I'm going to be in an all-girls school

Now before you start coming up with all the usual merriment and joking about, please consider how terrifying it will be to be one of very few men in a school of over 1000 girls ....

Help :!:

I didn't know such places still existed, I'm sure you'll be the consummate professional though
