With regards to breakdown cover Auto Express did one of their yearly award thing's recently and the RAC and AA were well down the list
a company called Gem Motoring Assist scored top or second top in every category,
they offer two types of cover, all inclusive where you don't pay a penny at the roadside or (for a cheaper premium) a claim back service where you pay the garage that comes out to you then claim the cost back from Gem,
one of the things with the claim back service at least, is that you are free to use your own recovery/garage choice and then just get the receipt from them to make a claim and yes i have signed up with them....

Funnily enough, our next door neighbour owns the biggest breakdown recovery service in the area. We asked his advice as our Mini needs cover...he told us to avoid RAC and AA at all costs as their service stinks in his opinion as his hands are very firmly tied over what he and his operators can do on their recovery operations (very rural here so AA and RAC sub-contract to local operators). He recommended Green Flag as they are very accomodating, with Britannia a close second. Useful getting the insider info......

Happy to recommend Britannia Rescue, not needed them much, but they've been ace every time. Got sick of the RAC years back; big buck, no service.

Charles, are you like me on an RAC breakdown policy that accrues no claims discount or do you do it via a bank account system or similar.

Currently I am trying to rebuild my RAC NCB after helping my daughter out when she broke down. When I was doing some online banking the other day I was looking at the Barclays account holders offers which included full RAC cover, travel insurance etc for a monthly fee and was wondering if this is the best way to go if one does actually need to use the breakdown cover at times. It also includes Europen cover but not for a car as old as mine.
