Cut the grass for the first time this season last weekend and I couldn't help noticing how much moss has built up around the estate. When I first arrived here I bought a John Deere sit-on which came with a bagging system for the cuttings. Lovely finish but after a while I got bored of having to stop to empty the bags - I've got several acres of garden, orchard and paddock to deal with - so I invested in a mulching plate and blades for the JD.
Certainly made life easier and for the first few years life was a doddle. But now I am beginning to think that the mulching kit has encouraged the moss to come through and I am now debating whether to return to the high lift blades and bagging system to try and strip the moss out and encourage better grass coverage.
Thoughts?
To mulch or not to mulch, that's the question ...
