Alpina Oil usage

Post by neil » Mon Mar 31, 2003 10:58 pm

It is stated that it is normal for an Alpina engine to use 1ltr of oil / 1000 miles.

My B10 3.3 is using 1ltr / 2000 miles.

Other people are experiencing less e.g. <1000 miles / ltr.

Let me know how much oil yours uses.

I have been told the official figures are 1litre/1000KM!

My Alpina B3 3.3 (1998 #110) uses about a litre of oil evry 1000miles.

This being my first Alpina....I was initially concerned but a call to the Alpina dealers seemed to confirm that all was OK.

Oil consumption

Neil,

My 98 B10 3.2 has used approx 1.5 litres of oil in 5.5k miles between services. What can I say other than...... :D

Neil

From the letter you have scanned it seems as though oil consumption on the later 3.3 engine is a known problem to Alpina whereas my experience of the 3.2 suggests there is not a problem with this earlier engine......unless anyone knows otherwise.

One of my relatives bought a brand new 2001 M3 convertible. He was burning huge amounts of oil until his engine finally failed at approx 13k miles. His main dealer was supplying top up oil free of charge as they were a bit embarassed about the situation. As far as I know his new engine now uses less than the 3.3 Alpinas.

Oil Usage

Post by Charles » Fri Oct 17, 2003 1:53 pm

Perhaps Alpina have sorted the oil consumption on the new "S" engine.

My B3S used 2 litres during the first 14,000 miles up to its first service. Since then, I have done another 4000 miles (don't ask - 18000 miles in less than 7 months) and I have gone and checked the dip specially for this posting. The answer - the level is still on MAX.

As for the mileage I am doing, the smile on my face confirms my decision to have fun rather than choose a diesel....

At last...

Post by Charles » Mon Jan 12, 2004 2:32 pm

Mileage is now 25k (round the world in less than 10 months - ouch) and I have just had to top the oil up (1 litre)

Doing the sums, that means 3 litres in 25,000 miles, which comes to .....err.....where's the calculator.....a litre of oil every 8,000 miles or so

In my book, that's perfectly acceptable

More problems

Post by neil » Thu Jan 22, 2004 11:31 am

It may be a more specific problem than originally thought - another owner (Nick) has contacted me stating he is getting 300miles / litre. His car is a June 2000 and dr_technicals (Sean) car, which recently had a new engine, was a July 2000 car.

Not sure if this is a coincidence or a pattern.

38k miles now and just put in a litre of the stuff.

Basically, I am adding one litre between services and these are coming every 14k miles.

No complaints there then.

Being mathematical for a moment and (checking my last posts) the extra litre is needed approximately 10-11k miles after the service...

Alpina oil usage

Post by sward » Fri Jul 09, 2004 10:43 pm

I have driven my 1999 B10 3.3 nearly 3000 miles since I bought it in May, including a trip to the south west of France, and have used half a litre of Castrol SLX. I love this car!

My B10 uses hardly any oil.

Probably a litre every 3-4k. I know there a big difference in engine age and types though.

I would have thought the newer engines to be more efficient.

Got to just under 7,000 miles (Car is now just short of 6 months old) and last night the yellow light came on. Thought I was going to get away with a top up

Hi Raymondo,

Just looking back to my posting of exactly a year ago and I found that I needed to put a couple of litres in before the first service. After that it has settled down to about one litre approximately 10k miles after a service.

Your experience is about the same as mine so don't be unduly concerned

Take care

Car's going rather well at the moment so I've just had to put another litre in - about 9kmiles after the last service.

This is slightly earlier than before but then I have been making use of the loosened up and just run-in engine quite a bit recently (mileage is now just over 50k after 19 months) :D
