B10 842: Works

Post by Abanko » Sat Jan 27, 2018 3:06 pm

HI All

Starting a thread as I have a feeling I will be positing a fair bit as I start to get the car back in shape. There is nothing majorly wrong - just the typical areas that need sorting. So on the list we have:

1. Sort the small bits of bubbling on sills and small dents- booked in but there is a 8 week waiting list!
2. Change the transmission oil / filter - found a ZF specialist near me so its booked in
3. Rear control arm need replacing - next week should see that being sorted
4. Fix power steering hose leaks to reservoir
5. Quite like to get some way of playing music from iphone - even if its just a 3mm jack being added somewhere.

Power Steering Hoses
Next on the list is to sort out the power steering hose leak from just under the reservoir. I tried cutting the ends of the hoses and refitting but they are still weeping. It's not bad - just annoying.

Had a look at the price of the reservoir and the two hoses and for genuine BMW they are quite steep (online-parts.co.uk). Had a look on allgermanparts.co.uk and for lemfoder reservoir and meyle hoses its much more reasonable.

Anyone used the allgermanparts ones?

Cheers

Cannot comment on allgermanparts but my hoses weep and I think it is simply a case of age and the impact of the fluid on the rubber which weakens the structure and allows fluid to weep through.

A simple replacement should solve the problem :D

I've currently got an intravee and an alpine ipod interface in the boot that came with the car, which would be great if i had an ipod...

if your car is post 99 and hasn't got nav i think aux is quite easy with a cheap cable of ebay

I'm temped to upgrade my handsfree kit with one that an do a2dp for streaming of music etc.

Hopefully sorting all the parts for the power steering this week so will let you know.

As for the connectivity, from what I can work out, the car was built July 2000 but not registered until May 2001. It's got the nokia phone with snap in connector, navigation, tv (analogue) , upgraded HiFi, CD multi-changer etc. I am not fussed about having the TV upgraded or CD so looking for something fairly simple.

If you don't have the DSP, then it's pretty straightforward to fit a 'Connects 2' converter in place of the CD changer (You can leave the changer in place, just connect the leads to the converter).

If you have DSP, it's a whole different ball game. You can still do it, but you need the optical cable converter and a different connector box. Bit more expensive, but works fine.

If you don't have DSP, I have a connects 2 box going spare - my car has DSP so bought it in error. PM me if your interested.

Yes the car has DSP - do you know what cables/convertor I need?

So had the rear control arms replaced today and all seems ok.
For the power steering leak, I got new reservoir and Meyle hoses from All German Parts. The rest of the bolts, seals, clips etc I got from BMW.

The hose that goes to the cooler fitted fine, the other one was not correct so will be returning it. However, garage has trimmed the existing hose and refitted with new clips and seems to be holding. If it starts leaking again, then looks like a hose from Bmw will be needed.

On the rear, I noticed before it went in that the drivers side is lower then the passenger side. The garage checked it through and even after changing the control arms, still different by about an inch- is this normal?
