B10 ALPINA sill cover

Has anyone tried repairing the standard Alpina logo sill covers as fitted in the door openings? It looks as though they are made of two pieces of plastic and were welded together or similar and a couple of mine have separated in the recent heat.
Before I try and repair them with super glue or similar I am open to ideas. The last resort of course is to buy new ones but no doubt they will cost a few bob.

Hi Jim, a couple of mine have done the same thing, I've not had a go at fixing them yet but I was wondering, rather than superglue, maybe a contact adhesive might be better?
Put a bit on both pieces let it go tacky then put them together then find you're stuck to it as well......

My passenger front was in a worse state than yours Jim so I bit the bullet and bought a new one for Â£53.57 delivered

Hi Steve,

It's good to hear you are still around, I was getting worried the old school 3.2 owners were dropping in numbers

. Where has blacky got to as like you he was on the ball with ideas and solutions to problems.

I think any method using glue will be interesting, especially if the outer soft part has stretched at all. I still reckon it is worth a go before replacing them though.

I bet your summer cruiser is still doing more miles than my old girl, yet another year for me in the hundreds rather than thousands of miles.

Thanks Barry, definitely cheaper than I expected. Hopefully that included the Alpina insert and you did not have to transfer it over?

You are also proving to be a useful source of information for the B10's and obviously still too enthusiastic and need to slow down a bit.

That's the cost for the complete cover Jim, I think there are 2 different types of clips holding it on but YouTube will show you how to remove it - order a couple of clips as they're prone to break.

I have plenty of ways left to waste money on the car so just ask!

Hi Jim, I'm still around don't worry, my old girl is in at the moment having new Lemforder arms and bushes on the back end,
then over the coming months it's new dampers all round with top mounts and the suspension arms at the front renewing.
That price for the covers is pretty good actually so might invest in a couple as well, I figured with the Alpina tax they would be into the three figure territory, thanks for the info Barry

Not seen Blacky post much recently either Jim.

Crikey Steve, it sounds like you are spending a few pennies on keeping your B10 in tip top condition. Did you have any obvious symptoms with the back end as in it skipping or similar?

It makes my recent purchase of spark plugs, air filter and a new very cheap OE intensive cleaning pump (Â£8.99) seem pretty insignificant.

It just started to feel a bit sloppy and not as sharp as it used to be, the MOT threw up an advisory for a split rubber boot on the nearside rear top arm balljoint,
so I bit the bullet and started the full restoration that I had actually been considering for a while prior to the MOT.

She's had 4 Subframe bushes, top arms, new integral links with horizontal balljoints and the original rubber bushes cut out of the bottom H arms and Powerflex bushes fitted,
last time I checked Powerflex didn't list bush replacements for those so they've only just introduced them.

It feels fantastic now and thats without new dampers and top mounts, oh and I've also had new engine and gearbox mounts fitted as well (all Lemforder)
after all the old girl is nearly 20 Years old now with 157,000 miles under her chassis and rubber doesn't last forever.

An impressive list there Steve so it sounds like you are doing your B10 proud and of course aiming to keep her for some time yet.

Final question, are you fitting original Alpina dampers or an alternative? Answer that one and I will leave you alone again for a while.

When I bought #88 it already had Bilstein B8's fitted all round so I've never actually driven it on Alpina suspension Jim (springs are still original Alpina)
It felt great on the Billy's when I bought it so I'm leaning towards staying with them, fronts are about Â£180 each whilst rears are about Â£165 each,
as opposed to the Alpina dampers which I understand are somewhere in the Â£250 a corner ballpark.

I got B8s for my Alpina and very happy with them. See my thread here for information about Buy Car Parts who supplied the shocks. They were good when they supplied to me at a discount, although other reviews were questionable.

Sounds like you might as well stay with the B8's Steve as you are happy with them already. Also your B10 has already been heavily modified with that steering wheel you fitted, even as nice as it is compared to the 4 spoke bus like Alpina one.

Well the price of these Alpina sill covers has now rocketed.

The price of a nearside front Alpina cover from the main dealers is now approx Â£120 whereas a standard BMW one is only Â£33.40, that is what I call a very heavy Alpina tax.

The FMW price for one is 100 euros plus whatever the P&P is.

Now for the big question, is the Alpina logo plastic insert the same size as the BMW insert and if so would it be possible to transfer the Alpina one on to a brand new BMW sill cover? At the exorbitant asking price for an Alpina one it has got to be worth considering.
