Why charge a fortune for a branded oil and only get a small slice when you can charge slightly less (appears cheaper) and get an even bigger slice?
I am currently using Shell Ultra fully synthetic 5W-40 which meets all the specification requirements for BMW and can get 10 litres for about £50 (£5 per litre) compared to nearer £80 for 8 litres of Castrol (£10 per litre).
Alternatively, you can buy a litre from the dealer and pay £18

im using Millers Oil which was recommended by a BMW Technician.
when i contacted Millers direct they agreed that there were 2 oil alternatives for my D3 Alpina MT. I went along with Millers Oils XF Longlife C3 Fully Synthetic 5W30 it cost £31.00 for 5 ltrs Obviously i bought more than that due to the amount needed.

The B10 V8 supplementary owners manual states Castrol GLX, and the BMW 540i manual states 0W or 5W between 30 and 50. I've seen recommendations for 0W30, but isn't the 0 to cover all bases for extreme cold weather use and for better fuel economy? I am in the UK would 5W be better? The stealer used 5W40 previously, LL04 (unspecified) the time after that, and are currently quoting for Shell Helix (Ultra?), not sure what spec, it didn't say. The local garage uses 5W30, but I might try Gulf Competition 0W30.

I asked Sytner UK about the rumours circulating about recommendations for using 10W60 on all Alpinas, and specifically whether this was true for the E39 B10 V8, and they told me that originally 5W30 was recommended but this changed to 0W30. Apparently the E90 B3s had issues with elevated oil consumption and Alpina responded by recommending 10W60, a thicker oil, to address this, presumably meaning less frequent oil top ups. On the E39 B10 V8 they said one could use either 0W30 or 10W60, depending on whether oil consumption was an issue or not, although I find it a little strange that they don't suggest anything in between for minor to moderate oil consumption issues, like 5W40, but there you go.

IMO there is no reason to deviate from the factory oil grade unless there's a oil consumption issue. The 3.3/3.4 lumps are well documented to use some oil, so in this case it would make sense to try an alternative oil grade. 10w60 is the oil of choice for M engines IIRC.PliSsK wrote:I asked Sytner UK about the rumours circulating about recommendations for using 10W60 on all Alpinas, and specifically whether this was true for the E39 B10 V8, and they told me that originally 5W30 was recommended but this changed to 0W30. The M62 V8 engines on the other hand are well known not to use a drop of oil even into serious mileages. In which case I seen no reason to deviate from the factory suggested 0w30.

That is more or less my observation. My 4.6 lump has not used up any oil in between services although my mileage is very low. I was wondering, does anyone add a friction modified to their B10 oil?Metrics wrote:IMO there is no reason to deviate from the factory oil grade unless there's a oil consumption issue.
