Waxing question

Post by Pago » Mon Aug 29, 2016 5:35 pm

Hello,

Having owned a D3 for 7 months now, someone recommended I wax the car to protect the paint. Do you recommend waxing also? If yes, is this something you can do yourself with good results or this something you have a professional handle? Sorry is this question is rather basic, but I have never gone through this before.

It's a simple process but you will want a full decontamination of the paint before any sealing occurs.

Waxing the car requires a good applicator, at least one plush microfibre for buffing off and your weapon of choice which is usually a carnauba wax or some kind of hybrid.

Personally I don't think you can beat the Soft 99 Fusso sealant for £20, they also do a straight carnauba which is called Authentic Premium (£30). You can get both on ebay or go to nipponshine.com.

There's also Collinite 476, 845 and 915 (£20-40) which are all very good and Britemax Vantage which is around £30-35. You can pay more if you want...they go up to astronomical money! The Fusso or Collinite have excellent beading and durability. All mentioned have very nice look.

I use 1000 gsm double sided for buffing but 600gsm will do.

Apply very very little wax, so little you can barely see it and layer it up. Wax, buff, wax, buff. Good to start on the boundary of the panel and then fill it in, but don't go back over wax you've already laid.

Get a nice plush cloth and fold it over. Don't catch the edges when wiping and don't let the wax cure too long or it will be hard to remove. Undue pressure might give you holograms. If it gets clogged fold again or change cloth. Avoid direct sunlight and hot panels, don't get it in the panel gaps etc.

I fin it a pleasant way to spend a bit of time, most are nicely scented and it just feels like you're really loving the car.

Don't forget the before and after pics! You'll love the beads when it rains

Like I said Chris, you know your stuff. Finish on your car is immaculate.

I never looked on ebay but how can BMW stop you selling Hard Wax?

They stopped selling them to me!

After I started selling them a BMW dealer also listed them on ebay (with 2 cloths) at £24 a bottle, but by that point I'd already sold a couple of hundred.

I ran out and they said no more...boooo!

Also depends on what colour of car you have.
I used Werkstat products on my silver D3, but using BF with BlackICE wax on the B6 (Onyx Blue) and X3 (Carbon Black)

Zymöl convert here. I use Zymöl Creme on the metallic grey B5, Ital on the red 360 and Carbon on the black Porsche.
Love the smell of those waxes.
Just put two coats on the B5.

With 2 young children and having to work a lot of extra hours due to how busy work is i currently haven't got the time to wax the car.

So I've had to bite the bullet and have applied a 'ceramic like' coating to my D5.

The product that I went for is called Nanolex Si3D which a little awkward to apply but the results are worth it, the car is now allergic to water and the coating has slightly darkened up the paint. I think it also adds some hardness to the paint.

If anybody is interested I have a couple of sample pots of the higher end Zymol waxes that I'll be listing on eBay.

D5 number 21

D3MT number 284 (gone but will be sadly missed)

I too use Zymol wax, for the last six years I have used Concours on the B10 and the results are excellent.

I'm a Collinite fan and have been using 476 for a few years. Last applied in September last year, and with top ups using quick detailer during the last year (Autosmart Tango and Sonax BSD) I am still getting good beading and protection.

Collinite was also applied to my wheels in March and is still offering good protection. Soapy water is all I am using and they come up mint each time.

Just trying to find a spare week to get some machine polishing done on teh car and then will apply G Techniq sealant.

For prep I use a machine polisher once a year around the mid spring months, DAS6 Pro Plus polisher to get rid of the light swirls with Meguiars Ultimate compound.

I have also started to use Bill Hamber Clay Bar every 6 months on the horizontal surfaces (roof, boot, bonnet and doors to the swage line) as it only requires water as a lube, just to decontaminate and flatten the paint.

To finish I also use Collinite 476s too. I try top it up every 2 months if I can.

Wash once a week with 2 buckets method and grit guards plenty Meguiars Gold Class Shampoo and a Dodo Juice Tribble wash mitt, I don't own a pressure washer so don't use snow foam to soften the dirt prewash......yet.

Black paint needs a lot of cleaning and work  .
