Classic Wheels Detail

Post by Arvi » Mon Mar 21, 2016 2:18 pm

Managed to dive into the garage to get my summer wheels prepped before they go on.

They were washed with Auto Smart Smart Wheels, detarred with Tardis and de-ironed. I then washed again and scrubbed the tyre walls with G101, dryed and then polished with Autoglym Super Resin Polish, Sealed with Extra Gloss Protection and waxed with Collinite 476. I'll put another coat of wax on before they go back on the car.

The tyres were dressed with Auto Smart Highstyle.

Anyway pics:

I am thinking of purchasing a small angled wheel woolies brush to keep the inside of the wheels clean - anyone used it or recommend something else?

Also has anyone found a good alcantera protector to use on seats and door cards on another car I need to detail?

Looking good, I did some similar work to mine over the weekend but not as thorough as yours!

I cleaned the wheels with diluted AG custom wheel cleaner (it's non-acidic), followed by a spray with Bilt Hamber korrosol. I finished 3 wheels off with an application of Chemical Guys wheel guard and the re-furbed wheel got a coating of Gtechniq C5 as a comparison.

Here's one of the CG WG after a spray:

Nice one Barry. How did you get on with the AG cleaner? Last time I used it a few years ago it was quite foamy and had to use a fair bit. I purchased a few 5 litre Autosmart products last year and liking their prodcutivity and effiecny on price.

Be interested to hear your feedback on the Chemical Guys wheel guard and the Gtechniq. I was tempted to get the AG Wheel Protectant but the reviews don't seem that great. Gtechniq seems to be getting rave reviews on Detailing World by some but seems very technique sensitive. I might got for their fabric protector for the Alcantera I need to protect.

Roll on sunnier days for a bigger detail !

I've used AG custom wheel cleaner for some time now and find it quite effective - my wife's wheels are always a mess and whilst it doesn't totally clean hers it seems quite good and pretty sure nothing short of pure acid would really clean hers properly!

I used C5 on one wheel last year as a test and was underwhelmed but had enough left in the bottle to try it again on a virgin wheel so thought this would be the best chance of success. After 24hrs the wheel felt a bit tacky and nothing like as silky smooth as the CG WG so I'm still not impressed.

I have some of the Gtechniq fabric protector and haven't used it but thinking it might be an idea to use on my newly covered alcantara steering wheel before it's too late.

I don't particularly enjoy the cleaning/detailing/whatever you want to call it until I'm finished :)

Ez wheel brush gets right to the back and the soft bristles will agitate any dirt
Used it for years and is one of my favourite wheel brush along with a swisswax detailing brush to get in all nooks

Stick with Collinite 476s Arvi, it's great stuff and lasts really well.

Wheels look great BTW.

Very nice!

I use Collinite 845 insulator wax once per month during the summer months on the wheels and 476 on the bodywork as a final coat after prepping, polishing etc, also top it up once every 2-3 months if I get the chance.

Does the 476 last well on the wheels too?

Certainly does, although depends on how strong your cleaning products are for cleaning wheels on a regular basis. I use normal car shampoo and find the Collinite lasts really well and protects the wheels/makes them easier to keep clean.

Thanks I'll try the 476 as the 845 insulator wax doesn't seem to last as well as the 476 on the body work.

I only wash them every week with the car with Meguiars Gold Class wash and a mitt and it keeps the dust at bay.

I took these wheels off last weekend and put my winters on. During the course of the year they have just had a pressure wash and then cleaned with the aid of wheel woolies. The large wheel woolie gets into the spokes and cleans the inside of the rim very well.

Occasionally I have used a bit of diluted smart wheels for a deeper clean without sacrificing stripping the wax. I was very impressed on how clean the rear of the wheels were with no tar stuck to it so all the cleaning, polishing sealing and waxing was worthwhile.

I've just purchased some Raceglaze Wheel sealant which I have applied to my winter set before fitting. Spray on, leave for a few minutes, buff off. Will see how they clean up in comparison next year when they come off.

Seeing as the weather was improving and I wanted to get the winter wheels off and the classics back on I spent yesterday cleaning the car and giving the Classics a deep clean before putting them on the car.

The wheels had been given a quick clean with soapy water before storage last year. Procedure was:

1. Pressure wash wheels.
2. Spray Autosmart Smart Wheels - agitated with Wheel Woolies brushes (highly recommended), washed again
3. De-tarred with Autosmart Tardis - wasn't that much tar to remove to be fair.
4. De Ironised using Bilt Hamber Korrosol Iron and Fallout remover - there was some iron runs from the wheel weights but nothing came off the wheels - last years treatment had done its job.
5. Polished up wheel weights using Autosol and wire wool.
6. Dried wheels and then sealed using Raceglaze Nano Wheel Sealant. This product is so easy to use - spray on - leave to bond for a few minutes and then buff off. I did 2 coats for decent coverage.
7. I also took off the rubber strips off the centre caps and following a members recommendation to use furniture protection felt those have gone on to stop the dreaded rattles.

Some pics below, though of course it did have to rain today before I could get the glourious full car shots in !
