Try the web site "viamichelin" and enter your destination and ask for the fastest route.

Dependsif you are in a rush or not.
I made the mistake of going direct and on the way south went through Paris
Not the brightest of moves
But hitting Dijon, Lyon and going round the coast from Montpellier was stunning.
Missed the Milau Viaduct though. That will have to wait for another year.
