Slight delay as one of the stud bolts was missing its thread on one end!!!

Anyway, car is back up and running and back at home Very Happy

The new tappets have made a huge difference to extraneous noise, as has further work on the VANOS. Now you can hear the induction roar properly Twisted Evil

Pics to follow in due course as Mr Crouch is otherwise engaged at present.

Just need to work out why the aircon has stopped working ...

We changed from a standard bolt set to an upgraded ARP stud system which has a separate bolt and nut.

Was this new gasket the copper one that had been discussed before or something different?
Glad the old girl is on the go once more

Multi Layer Steel item from Cometic - with customised bore and thickness.

Is that like a plywood version of steel?
Does metal have a "grain" as such?
I know you can rearrange the molecules with varying heat treatments but not heard of this multi layered stuff.
Let's hope it does the trick anyway.
What was the verdict on piston number 1 , did it need replaced or new rings fitted? Any damage to the cylinder itself with the gasket debris flying around?

Sorry about the lots of questions but I do find this sort of failure and re=engineering rather interesting Rolling Eyes

Think of it as a sandwich with two bits of bread and a filling. In the case of an ALPINA gasket, the filling is organic (fibrous) whilst the MLS version has a steel filling which can be of varying thicknesses to give you the overall thickness you want.

Have a read here

No1 piston was "retired hurt" - pictures to follow in due course but, amazingly, no damage to valves, head or cylinder bore
