ALPINA's biggest ever range
ALPINA's biggest ever range
By my reckoning with the introduction of the D3 we now have 14 different models to choose from:
1) D3 Bi-Turbo Saloon
2) D3 Bi-Turbo Touring
3) B3 Bi-Turbo Saloon
4) B3 Bi-Turbo Touring
5) B3 GT3 Coupe
6) B5 Bi-Turbo Saloon
7) B5 Bi-Turbo Touring
8 ) D5 Bi-Turbo Saloon
9) D5 Bi-Turbo Touring
10) B6 Bi-Turbo Coupe
11) B6 Bi-Turbo Cab
12) B7 Bi-Turbo Saloon
13) B7 Bi-Turbo L Saloon
14) XD3 Bi-Turbo Suv
Factor in LHD/RHD and the choice (for non-UK) of Allrad and it means 41 different variations.
If we get a D4 and a B4 and don't count the B3 GT3 then I reckon we'd be at 17 or 50 !
14) D4 Bi-Turbo Coupe
15) D4 Bi-Turbo Cab
16) B4 Bi-Turbo Coupe
17 ) B4 Bi-Turbo Cab
Given the limited numbers ALPINA makes annually that's a hell of a range !

Certainly is.
Danger is taking the eye off the ball with so many different variants.
Then again 30 years ago BMW only had the 3,5 6 & 7 series now look what they are churning out?
Sign of the times perhaps.
It is refreshingly nice to see a tiny manufacturer such as Alpina continuing to grow from strength to strength

B3 3.3 Coupe #090
D3 2.0 Biturbo Touring #098
D3 2.0 Biturbo Touring #098
The expansion into Diesel engines over recent years has been a big factor along with BMW's thirst for new model ranges. Looking at the configurator in its full glory makes Alpina look most impressive online (not biased of course).ali-bumble wrote:Sign of the times perhaps.

Re: ALPINA's biggest ever range
Problem with this is that as you state 'Given the limited numbers ALPINA makes etc. etc....... Anyone who places an order will have an extended wait as the cars have to go through Buchloe.....or does the D3 just go on the BMW line and out the door as with the previous two versions?neil wrote:By my reckoning with the introduction of the D3 we now have 14 different models to choose from:

edit!
Thinking a little more along these lines....this cannot be as you specific items fitted to D3's that are Alpina only, Lavalina Leather etc. so these cars must also go through Buchloe.
Mini 1000 - Escort 1100 Estate - Triumph Spitfire 1500 - Escort Harrier 1.6 (wish I still had) - Escort Xr3 - Escort Ghia - Orion Ghia Inj.- Golf GTI - Astra GTE 16v.- Cavalier 4 x 4 - Sierra 2.9 4 x 4 - Discovery 200 TDI - Discovery 300 TDI Auto - Forester Turbo - Audi Avant 4.2 (manual) - Avant 4.2 (TipTronic) - D3 Touring (manual) D3 Bi-Turbo Switchtronic (Sold). Alpina Marmite Car (Arrived at last...8 months wait)....Lovely car but now Written Off!
Just about every month BMWcar have a new model to report on which is difficult to keep up with. Whilst I'd like to see Buchloe make more cars, it appears to me that more and more manufacturers are leaning to pumping out "niche" models and at the same time often reducing quality. If a buyer can get a 'standard' car built with many of his own specs he'll often pay for that privilege of "exclusivity".
Some might say it's boring to have a similar car to someone else (as it used to be) but I worry that Alpina will stretch the range too far and compromise on exclusivity, generally.
Having been to numerous BMW club & inter-club days there is rarely, if ever, 2 cars the same. I don't necessarily think that's a good thing, especially when some when someone loudly says "I've got something YOU haven't". But then my B10 was the ONLY Alpina on track and at club days for years. THAT was always fun!

... and I think that model/price overlap becomes a problem too? SUV and Touring, petrol and diesel in the same series, etc. They need separation but mustn't kill another variants market.
Take the XD3 at £55k and a D3 Touring at (say) £48k.
I wonder what the sales ratio of XD3 to D3 Tourings will be?

For the life of me I don't know how they can keep up with model range/price. Must be a nightmare. Then 2nd hand models could go for whatever. I mean, prices new or used, would depend on so much, just glad I'm not in sales. Looking at current B10's just in Germany is crazy right now where asking prices are either stupid low to stupid high, then factor in private/dealer differences and my mind wobbles wildly...when SOBER!

I know what you mean, but they are not aimed at the same sort of person/need.Guy wrote:The bigger problem how little some of the models differ from the BMWs they are based on.
The B5 is very similar to the M5 and it's likely the B3/M3 (M4) will be the same.
Watch Chris Harris' review of the B3 BT on YouTube. He starts off by saying that the ALPINA make ROAD cars, and at the end says the M3 will be faster on the track, but it will be lucky if it is a more desirable road car (and that from a racing driver).
He gets it!

There are some opportunities for Alpina to offer different models such as the D3 and D5 which do not have a direct M competitor.Guy wrote:The bigger problem how little some of the models differ from the BMWs they are based on.

The new D3 may see a reduction in the demand for the B3 but I would like to see the engine unit placed into a B1 - Now that would be a stand out car

The D3 right now and the XD3 stand out as different. The D5 is similar to an M550d which is not sold in the UK. The B5 is barely distinguishable from an M5 in my opinion apart from softer chassis, same with B3 vs upcoming M3.big blue wrote:There are some opportunities for Alpina to offer different models such as the D3 and D5 which do not have a direct M competitor.Guy wrote:The bigger problem how little some of the models differ from the BMWs they are based on.
