E28 B9 3.5 #293

Post by Bob » Wed Nov 06, 2019 1:03 am

That is very nice but the boot badges that way round just feels wrong to me (i know it supposed to be original)

I believe it is #293 but never verified that.

Some of the B9 owners swear that Sytner delivered them with the badges that way, so it must be original.

Talking to the owner via FB, that car is completely original and yes it is #293

I would assume that badge fitment was dictated by Buchloe and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a B9 from there with badges this way. I don’t understand why would Sytner do it differently.

Sytner did many things that differed from their German counterparts though, no idea why but my old e23 B10 was the same.

i used to own this car and i can assure you that the badges were the 'correct' way round when i sold it!

btw if anyone from here is going to buy it, they need to check the boot as the rear tailgate had completely rusted through where the mechanic supposed to be looking after/fixing it for me left it poking out in the rain to rot whilst he had went awol. heartbreaking as the rest of the car was in good condition. would have had to have a whole new section welded in. that and the boot floor. sold it for 4k :(

To add my bit to the badge discussion - I own two B9s built buy Sytner - 1983 e28 and 1984 e24 .. both have the B9 on the nearside ( Left ) and ALPINA on the offside of the boot .. ive wondered about this being different to the German made cars and can only assume that Frank decided to do it differently ..

Best Steve

This whole badge position thing got me intrigued so i checked some period road test articles of the B9 when new and yep, Sytner built B9's with the B9 3.5 badge on the left.

Interesting though as subsequent Sytner built Alpinas had the Bx and Cx badges on the right.

Maybe it was a case of Sytner incorrectly placing them in the early days when they started putting cars together in 1983 and soon learnt (or were told to) place them correctly?

RIght now i have two E28 Alpina B9 3.5's in my workshop, a Black Y reg and an Henna red A reg, the red car with the B9 badge on the left and the black car with it on the right but that car has had a full repaint in the past.

Another interesting quirk is that despite being built months apart the early car used a very early motronic ECU which was used on E23 735i and E24 635CSi from 1980-1982 with an Engine loom from an E23 732i/735i and the later car used a later motronic ECU used on E23 735i/E24 625CSi from 1983-1985.

interesting stuff

My old B9, as you can see this had never had any work done to it before I got it years ago, badge arrangement is as per the green car

i have a 1985 E24 B10 and previously had an 1984 E24 B9 both sytners.
no idea if badges are/were original, but on the B10 the alpina is on the right and on the B9 on the left.
no idea if this is helpful or interesting.

HI Ed, i purchased the car from the guy you must have sold it to. Yes the boot required some attention and this has all been repaired and painted. The original decals were still on the car but cracked so i replaced them. I have today its a gem of a car. I can tell the car has been well looked after. It is so responsive. I am reluctantly selling the car, due to other projects that i need to finish. I have another B9, which is having a nut and bolt restoration with very low owners, which is cost me a fortune, and i have just purchased an e28 B10 which needs work as well.
