D3 recall for EGR cooler?

Post by Jay964rs » Sat Jan 05, 2019 8:13 pm

Hi all,
I spoke with Sytner Leicester at the end of November to book my 2015 D3 F31 in for a due oil change.
I was advised a recall has been issued due to potential EGR coolant leak.
I decided to use my local dealer in Swindon and asked about the recall, but they couldn’t give me any information.
Reading on the F30 forum, there are real horror stories of cars being off the road for weeks due to parts supply.
Has any D3 owner had a car go in for any recall work?
I’ve not received a letter and the DVSA website says nothing about a recall.
Thanks for any info.
Jay

My 2012 D5 is having its EGR replaced next week, the independent garage that looks after it had a look on the system and unfortunately it doesn't qualify for the free replacement part.

There were 2 other BMW group cars in for an EGR replacement when I called in at the garage.

Have you had a look at the coolant level to see if you have a leak?

The EGR cooler recall is very widespread on N57 I6 engines between 2010-16. The recall however does not mean the EGR cooler is automatically replaced, it is inspected for one of two failures - coolant leak, or gas leak.

My D5 (same engine as D3) recently started to leak diesel fumes into the cabin, my dealer investigated and after two visits (first one the cooler was not removed, the second visit it was) the cooler has indeed failed (metal pipe on back fractured).

It's been at dealer since mid Dec due to parts shortages...

Was the work carried out free of charge?

I've been quoted around 2 hours labour and parts.

Thanks for the replies so far.
No coolant loss, no unusual smells in the cabin, all is good.
Think I’m worrying unnecessarily.
Inconsistent info from different dealers and nothing on the government website doesn’t help.
I’ll see what DL Swindon say on Thursday 🤞.

EGR cooler Update

Post by Jay964rs » Thu Jan 10, 2019 9:30 pm

Went to DL Swindon for my minor service and EGR cooler inspection.
All is good, no coolant loss, no cracks, no need to worry about it.
On a downer, my gearbox is weeping around the gasket, so might need a new gasket and also a fluid change. Thankfully I pay for a BMW warranty, so I might end up getting my moneys worth.

Had a service done for the F30 D3 in November at Sytner Nottingham and noone mentioned a recall or this specific issue. I am back in at the end of January so will ask specifically on the EGR coolant leak. More information is found on https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new- ... -fire-risk.

It does state..............

"The recall affects several BMW models, including examples of the 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, X3, X4, X5 and X6, with both four and six-cylinder diesel engines affected depending on the model. Four cylinder cars built between December 2014 and August 2016 are affected, while six-cylinder cars produced between July 2012 and June 2015 are also part of the recall."

So looking at the date of manufacture label under the hood is suggested rather than using your registration date.

A heads up for anyone booking their cars in, mine is at Sytner Maidenhead today. The communication i had from BMW UK was that the parts were on back order until Jan 21st which is why they were booking from this date, which implies that the parts would be available when it is at the dealer.

However, once at Sytner Maidenhead i was advised that the parts are still on back order and if after the inspection the EGR is required to be replaced they will hold your car, as its a safety issue, until they have the parts and BMW will arrange a loan car. So be prepared!

Having a loan car is not too bad, the annoying fact is that it has now turned cold and icy and the loan car will not have winter tyres unlike my Alpina......aaaaghhhhhh

My D3 is in Sytner High Wycombe also awaiting delivery of the new part due to leaking EGR coolant...estimate was 7-10 days (from Mon 28th Jan).

Yes my car was covered by BMW - new EGR cooler, valve and a small breather hose.

My car went in mid Dec and I got it back this week due to the parts back order craziness. Like mentioned above when inspected they found a crack in the back of the cooler rigid metal pipe and so held the car. The symptom I had was exhaust smells in the cabin.

BMW have handled this situation badly, not having parts available for 6 weeks is pretty ludicrous in anyone's book. I was given a Nissan to keep me mobile...

On the plus side an expensive repair has been covered by BMW. It's so damn good to have the car back - if you want to appreciate your Alpina again, run around in a Nissan for 6 weeks!

Spoke to Sytner today, they said this: "The cooler parts potentially required for your vehicle are still on back order, we would need to check it first to determine whether it needs replacing and then be authorised to order it. At the moment, I have had cars been here for 4 weeks waiting for that particular part so I cannot put a time scale on how long it could take"

Given the pictures from the weekend of a D3BT going up in flames apparently as a result of the EGR catching fire I'm a bit concerned...
