Yes, getting very tempted to move to an Alpina. Does everyone generally use a BMW main dealer for regular servicing (I'm looking at one that will probably be new enough to warrant keeping a strong service history book appropriately stamped up).

With special parts and quite significant changes to the engine (on a D3/4), are regular BMW dealers ok to stick with, or is anyone aware of a good specialist based in Scotland who may be better to seek out?

I'm in Edinburgh and have had lots of issues with Eastern BMW main dealer with my Alpinas.
I have been told by them even though they are classed as Scotlands ///M specialist dealership and all their technicians have had special training they are still not prepared to service my Alpina
If you are in Edinburgh area or even worth travelling through to use
David at Alba Motor co for all mechanical work and
Gordon at GFM Diagnostics for electrical if beyond my means

Both highly skilled and used to Alpinas and sourcing correct parts

I have my current and previous D3 BTís serviced at B & M Centre in Yoker, Glasgow.

The owner, Douglas does have some knowledge of Alpina and he and all his staff I have found to be passionate about the cars they work on so have no problem recommending them.

Check out their Facebook site

Stay well clear of the main dealers. Had really bad experiences with Douglas Park Hillingdon who failed miserably trying to replace a diff on a previous Alpina.

my tip is this, firstly find out which parts (if any) are not standard BMW parts, for service including the filter, oil, plugs indeed anything. Get those part numbers. Find or order those parts yourself before a service. The find a BMW dealer or recognised indy who is will to fit them despite what their computer might say.

The ALPINA Vin number is not in the BMW dealer computer EPC system so will only throw up the original donor BMW model. This is where things can go wrong. They can find ALPINA parts but only by the part number.

I now have this arrangement with my local Sussex dealer and I dont have to take the car all the way to Nottingham.

This is just a suggestion by the way. I know there are some owners on here who are in the Aberdeen area, although I appreciate that is geographically a distance from Edinburgh. I have driven it many times. However, there was a local BMW dealer there who specialised in ALPINA unless I am mistaken.

AW Autotech in Aberdeen are good.
I supply the parts and have them do the work.
I can highly recommend them if you are in the Shire.

Great advice, thanks.

Aberdeen isn't that far if you're only over there once every 9000 miles or so. I've no hesitation in travelling a bit.

On the Alpina part numbers, is there a publicly accessible database for getting these? Online or elsewhere?
I'm sure I've also seen that you can look up the definitive spec of specific Alpina's somewhere, but maybe I'm imagining this??

Calterdon in Inverness (now Harry Fairbairn) serviced my D3 back in the day with no issues whatsoever and were very reasonably priced also.
Compared to my wife's Fiesta at the time, it was cheaper to have a bi-annual service on the D3 than it was for an annual Ford dealer service on the Fiesta 1.2 Zetec!
