Water based Gummi Pflege

Post by Alpina Jim » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:52 am

As the old BMW Gummi Pflege rubber treatment is no longer available I bought a bottle of the newer water based Nextzett Gummi Pflege, £8.50 from ebay.

My E39 suffers from creaking door seals when they dry out and in the past the old BMW product did a great job of curing it. Being water based the new product doesn't seem so good when applying it but after a couple of coats the seals look great with a silky finish and hey presto the creaking has disappeared, so it works. :)

The under bonnet and boot seals were also given a couple of coats and they also look like new now.

Just to add to this topic. I also used to use Gummi Pfledge, but after various different people getting into the car and getting their hands dirty (don't ask me - I don't touch the door frame when I get in??), I decided to see if I could sort something a bit more permanent. I also noticed that the gummi pfledge attracts dirt and the area where the top seal meets the body had become scuffed.

Working on the theory that simple is best, I cleaned the seals and door aperture with brake cleaner and than ran a strip of electrical tape along the area where the top seal of the door meets the roof. My car is Alpina Blue so it's not particularly visible with the doors open (can't really see it at all in the photo), but I've also been looking at some clear body protecting tape available on ebay and I intend to get some of this and replace the electrical tape.

It reduces the creaks from the doors, but doesn't get rid of them. The tape also eventually starts to become unstuck, but it has been lasting about 6 months.

There were still some creaks and after some thinking and trial and error, it seems like most of the creaks actually come from the vertical seal where the front door meets the rear door.

What I did here was to get some self-adhesive velcro on a roll, and using only the 'felt' side cut strips the length of the contact area. Depending on the width of the velcro you use, these also need to be trimmed lengthways to about 10mm wide. Clean the door frame area fix the strips to the inside edge of the front door where it will meet the seal.

Hey presto - no more door creaks!

I now have to sort the many sunroof rattles, rear deck rattles, creaky chairs, door panel noises, etc, etc, etc....... :?

Nice fix. I had a sunroof rattle some time ago and luckily it fixed itself.
