I'm considering this Roadster S that is for sale at James Paul and wondered if it was known on the register?

No, #108 was Mark Guthries - markEG on the forum - he sold it privately recently

I think it might be #257...

Prices for decent examples have been heading steadily upwards Brian...

I've confirmed that it's #257 - so it was was enthusiast owned and used a number of times as John Drake's Zymol show car - used to be registered on a 'BMW 136' plate

Forgive my ignorance: what is the difference between a lux and a standard version?

According to the original spec sheets the Lux pack added Pro Nav, Xenons, Headlamp washers, PDC, Alpina wind deflector, Isofix, MFSW, Cruise, Bluetooth, CD Changer, Alpina leather dash and door trims and Alpina Dynamic 19" wheels

But, for the UK cars, the 19" wheels, leather dash and door trims were standard for all cars, so you didn't get as much for the cost of the Lux pack as other countries. In June 2005, Alpina increased the standard equipment of the UK cars to also include the CD Changer, Cruise Control, PDC & MFSW

The easy way to spot that the car has the Lux pack is the pop-up Nav screen on the top of the dash
