Replacing tyre valves on Classic wheels
Replacing tyre valves on Classic wheels
I had to replace 2 valves recently, been leaking for a while after refurbishment. Modified a 3/8†13mm, 6 point socket on a grinder. When you look the valve the nut part is very shallow so the important bit was to grind the end flat to get rid of the chamfer on the inside of the socket to allow it to grip as much surface as possible so the socket sits all the way on. I have included a link with a note from Alpina on changing the valves hope this helps someone in future.
I followed the instructions to the letter, the last thing I wanted was to strip a thread.
My Classic wheels they have had a couple of refurbs with the valves remaining on. Probably should have removed them.
The valve on the left I tried to remove with a standard socket as you can see it didn't work. The other valve and the rounded one were removed easily with the modified socket.
You can see where I ground the chamfer away at the bottom of the socket to give it as much grip as possible.
The 2 removed valves, the o rings are completely flattened and just about destroyed probably due the refurbishment. Not surprising they were leaking really. I will keep them and use temporarily if the wheels get refurbed again.

They’re quite precise instructions, when I changed my valves a while back I was most concerned with finding a suitable socket. I didn’t use loctite on mine as assumed the o ring would do it’s job and I wonder why the thread is whitworth!

Thank you for posting this up. I just ordered new metal valves for my winter wheels, and I require my summers refurbishing so Sytner provided the valves.
Great Post!
